About the Author
Elias P. Gyftopoulos received his doctorate in electrical engineering from MIT in 1958. He is MIT's Ford Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and of Nuclear Engineering.
Gian Paolo Beretta was awarded a doctorate in engineering at MIT in 1981. A full Professor of Thermal Sciences at Brescia University, he is a frequent visiting professor at MIT.

An Intellectually Rigorous Presentation of Thermodynamics

As a teacher I am greatful to the authors, Gyftopoulos and Beretta, for providing me (and other teachers of thermodynamics ) with this novel, logically consistent and enlightening approach to thermodynamics. I use their exposition as the foundation of my teaching in both my graduate and undergraduate engineering courses in thermodynamics. I start with an expanded version of Chapter 14 of the book. This Chapter gives a concise summary of the thermodynamic concepts that constitute the basic structure of thermodynamics. Actually, the authors have a paper, found in the Proceedings ASME, Vo. 266, pp 206-217 (1993), in which they outline their presentation of the basic concepts in a sequence of 10 lectures. In that sequence, as in the book, there is a seamless flow from one concept to the other, without arbitrary statements, or non-rigorous derivations and misconceptions, as in most of the thermodynamic textbooks. For instance, unlike others who insist on talking about heat from page one, in spite of the fact that the concept of heat cannot be understood without the Second Law, Gyfropoulos and Beretta introduce heat towards the end of their exposition of basic concepts, where I believe it actually belongs. The above paper summarizes the order of introduction of concepts which I copy here:
"System (constituents and parameters); properties; state; energy(without heat and work) and energy balance; classification of states in terms of time evolution; existence of stable equilibrium states; available energy;entropy (without heat and temperature) of any state (equilibrium or not) and entropy balance; properties of stable equilibrium states; temperature in terms of energy and entropy;chemical potentials; pressure; work; heat; applications of balances"
My experience is that with this exposition of concepts the students end up with a better understanding of the structure of thermodynamics and a clear mental picture of the framework of basic concepts on which they can attach the application treatments they subsequently learn. I share the entusiasm of the two reviewers from Blacksburg about the book and its presentation of the entropy and the energy-entropy diagrams and I would like to add one more element: the treatment of the concept of reservoirs and the resulting extremely simple derivation of the Carnot Coefficient.

A Must for the Serious Student of Thermodynamics

Basing their foundations of thermodynamics on a non-statistical view
of nature, the authors provide the reader with the first complete and
totally unambiguous presentation of thermodynamics. Unlike all other
texts which present thermodynamics as a statistical theory that
applies to macroscopic systems in states of thermodynamic equilibrium
only, this novel exposition by Gyftopoulos and Beretta shows in very
sharp contrast that thermodynamics is indeed non-statistical in nature
and applies to both macroscopic and microscopic systems (including one
particle systems) either in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium or
not in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. This is not, for example,
simply a rehash of all the books on "equilibrium" or
"classical" thermodynamics, which have proliferated and
inundated the scientific and engineering community particularly over
the last 40 years. In fact, "classical" thermodynamics or
"thermostatics" is simply a special case of the thermodynamic
foundations presented in this text, foundations which also provide the
basis for the first complete resolution of a number of paradoxes,
which have plagued the scientific community since the 19th century.
These include, for example, the paradox of Maxwell's Demon, which the
authors resolve by proving that individual molecules have private
entropies just as they have private inertial masses and private
energies. Another, the paradox between macroscopic irreversibility
and microscopic reversibility, is resolved by the authors simply,
elegantly, and completely by proving that spontaneous entropy
generation (irreversibility) is independent of the size of the system,
i.e. it applies at the macroscopic level just as much as at the
macroscopic level. Though not presented in this book, the
complementary quantum theoretical foundations of thermodynamics, which
the authors have developed, lend further credence to the generality
and strength of the theory presented in this book. Finally, as
outlined in Chapter one of this excellent text, certain chapters can
be used for one or two undergraduate level courses while others can be
used for one or two courses at the graduate level. I personally have
used the entire book for three years at the graduate level and
consider it essential for solidifying the theoretical foundations of
our graduate students as well as for clarifying and eliminating many
of the errors and misconceptions, which have resulted from the
predominant statistical treatment of thermodynamics. Without
reservation, this book is a must for the serious student of
thermodynamics.

A truly revolutionary approach.

If you are seriously interested in thermodynamics, you have to read this book. Most textbooks treat temperature and entropy as ultimately indefinable, while the definitions in this text are so elegantly logical that they will quite literally blow your mind and force you to rethink everything you have been taught on the subject. I recommend this book not only to students of thermodynamics, but also to anyone who loves science and was never satisfied with definitions of temperature or entropy. This is easily the best textbook I have ever read.

Stephanie Daventry French has directed over 40 productions using Stanislavsky's Active Analysis. She teaches the Stanislavsky System integrated with many other techniques as head of the Acting for Theatre, Television and Film track at East Stroudsburg University.

Philip G. Bennett has been an actor, teacher and director of the Stanislavsky System since 1969 - Artistic Director of the San Francisco Theatre Academy 1976-1984, the Bennett TheatreLab & Conservatory 1984-present, and Assistant Artistic Director to Russian emegré teacher, Sonia Moore, American Stanislavski Theatre, 1969 – 1975.

About the Author
Dr. Ileana Carmen Rogobete is a licensed psychologist, psychotherapist, clinical trainer and supervisor. She is the director and founder of the Areopagus Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice in Timisoara, Romania. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa and is a member of several international family therapy associations. Dr. Rogobete has a multicultural experience in family therapy training and research as well as in clinical practice with families and couples from various cultural backgrounds. She is involved in several research projects at the University of Cape Town and Cornerstone Institute in South Africa, where she is an associate lecturer and e-course developer in Family and Development Studies. Her publications and research interests focus on contextual approaches to understanding trauma and healing, resilience, family and couple therapy, as well as the self of the therapist.

Dr. Alexandru Neagoe is vice-dean of the Faculty of Sociology and Psychology, the West University of Timisoara, Romania, and associate professor of the Social Work Department at the same university. He is also a pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Timisoara and president of the Areopagus Centre for Christian Studies and Contemporary Culture. Dr. Neagoe has published numerous books and articles in the areas of theology, social work and family studies. He holds a BA and a PhD from Brunel University, London, UK, his doctoral thesis being published by Cambridge University Press.

Hooked from the Start!

S.E Hall and Angela Graham have done it again! I love this writing duo like crazy. I knew I would be going for a ride and I was extra pumped about the storyline. One of my many guilty pleasures is reality shows and one of my favorites is a dating show on an island so I had a feeling I was going to be hooked and I was 100% correct.

The show is set on a tropical island. It starts out with 8 men and 8 woman including one couple and the rest are singles. 8 of them are celebrities from different worlds and the other 8 are their plus ones...friends, sibling and roomies. They are there to find their perfect match and to win money for their charities.

The one couple that has entered the house is Oakley and Harlow. They were high school sweethearts that have been apart for years and back together and ready for an adventure. Oakley is an NFL star and Harlow is a student and part-time worker. Harlow is not used to be in the spotlight and not comfortable with all the cameras but she wants to be there with Oakley. They are solid going in but will they be on the way out?

The show is full of challenges and not just the ones to win cash. You have to deal with all the different personalities in the house and that will cause insecurities and bitchiness. Harlow soon finds out her real friends can be from the ones that are there to cause problems and not there for the right reasons. There is all kinds of scandalous actions going on...who is sleeping with who? Who actually has feelings for another? It's craziness.

One thing that is not crazy is the friendships. Harlow has made friends with some amazing women and then there is Cruz. He is one of her girlfriends brothers, he is so protective over his sister and he looks out for the other women as well. He is not really there for himself but for his sister Emma, she begged him to do the show and to take her with him.

I loved this book! It was so fun awesome that is was about a reality show. It had scandal, fun, sexiness, twists, turns and heart all rolled up in one. It must of have taken a ton of notes to get it all together with 16 characters. There are the main few but all of the characters are in there playing the game. I felt like I was right there along with the drama and had my favorites. Cruz is definitely one of them, his protectiveness, attitude and overall hottness got me.

I think this book was written especially for me. It's the genre I love, AND it all takes place on a reality TV show (yes, I'm addicted to reality television), and to say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement....I LOVED this book. It's not all about reality TV, so don't be put off, this book is so much more. 'Matched' is written by 2 of the best authors in the business, SE Hall and Angela Graham, and they definitely didn't disappoint with this one.
The story is based around a group of celebrities that are put into a house with a personal friend, and they are matched to their soul mate by a computer. They need to compete in different tasks and challenges together to eventually find out their true soul mate, but, does the computer always get it right?? You'll have to read it to find out.
I was hooked on this book from the first chapter, and I couldn't put it down until I found out how everything panned out. Some I predicted, and some decisions, I was totally shocked by.
In 'Matched' we might some great characters, that I fell in love with instantly, and others that I had a love-hate relationship with. This story isn't all about the TV show, there are so many side stories going on that I was constantly learning more about each and every person in the house. I even loved the nasty ones, they were written so well, that I really enjoyed the banter and conflict between them and some of the favourites.
There are a few favourite characters to watch out for. Cruz was unbelievable, and will always hold a place in my heart. His honesty, and protectiveness of his sister, along with his devilish good looks and charming ways had me hoping that he'd find the right soul mate. There were so many girls in the book that I loved, Harlow, Jas, Emma, and Callie made me want friends just like them.
The authors have written an amazing book here. I fell in love, laughed, and, yes, I cried at times. There were several parts that I was not expecting. I'd predict what I thought would happen, and I was usually wrong, so there were times I had to re-read to make sure it was right.
If you want a fun, addictive read, that will have you begging for it to never end, do yourself a favour, and read 'Matched'. I highly recommend it.

Grade 1-4-- Time to board the Magic School Bus again with that wild, wacky, and wonderful teacher, Ms. Frizzle. After she teaches her class about the human body and they visit the science museum, Mrs. Frizzle shrinks the bus and the class--except Arnold, who swallows them. This gives Cole and Degen the chance for two parallel stories, inside and outside of Arnold. With the bus inside, Cole explains digestion from the stomach into the small intestines. Then the bus enters a blood vessel where readers can see the plasma, red and white blood cells, and the flow into the heart. From there the class, now out of the bus and garbed in operating room smocks and masks, flows with the blood cells, now with fresh oxygen, to the brain. They climb down the bones of the spine, follow nerves to see muscles work, and then finally catch up with the bus to emerge in the nasal cavity. Meanwhile on part of each facing page, Arnold has coped with being lost and alone and has made it back to the school. With an enormous sneeze he sends the bus out to join him in the parking lot. The class can now chart the body from actual experience. Cole concludes with a true-false test with answers to help readers distinguish reality from fantasy. As readers of the previous "Magic School Bus" books (Scholastic) know, this is an enjoyable look at factual material painlessly packaged with the ribbons and balloons of jokes and asides meant to appeal to kids. Degen's zany, busy, full-color drawings fill the pages with action and information far beyond the text. Using a variety of visuals, including notes, close-ups, and diagrams along with a variety of realistic kids, he moves the parallel stories to their conclusions. Kids will love this book. --Sylvia S. Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen outdo themselves in "The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body." It is their most ambitious collaboration yet, and it definitely doesn't disappoint.
As is the custom, the third book in this science series (written in 1989) picks up where the second story left off. Ms. Frizzle is showing her students a filmstrip about the human body. "We're going to learn all about ourselves," she says. Then she announces the next field trip - the class is heading to the museum to "see an exhibit about how our bodies get energy from the food we eat." However, anyone who has even an inkling as to the kind of person Ms. Frizzle is should know that things rarely, if ever, go according to plan. A field trip is never just a field trip when you're taking a ride aboard her magic school bus.
The Friz and her students stop at a park for lunch before arriving at the museum. Afterward, everyone goes back to the bus . . . except for Arnold! He's still sitting at a picnic table, daydreaming and eating a bag of Cheesie-Weesies. And before the class realizes what is happening, the bus shrinks to the size of a Cheesie-Weesie . . . where it is promptly downed in one gulp by Arnold!
"I thought we were going to the museum," says one student.
"There's been a slight change of plans," explains Ms. Frizzle. "We're being digested instead."
Why visit an exhibit about the human body when you have a magic school bus and a teacher like Ms. Frizzle who can take you directly to the source?
If "At the Waterworks" was like priming the pump, and "Inside the Earth" was like getting the ball rolling, "Inside the Human Body" is like plowing full-steam ahead. Cole and Degen have firmly established themselves as a literacy force to be reckoned with; this is proven in the confidence of the writing and the boldness of the illustrations. There is so much going on in this story that you almost need a scorecard to keep track of it all. It seems as though Cole and Degen are bound and determined to one-up themselves with every book they come out with.
A list of some things Ms. Frizzle educates her class about would include: blood cells (red and white), blood vessels, digestion, germs, the heart, lungs, molecules, oxygen, plasma, the small intestine, etc. Do you know what villi are? You will after you read this book! Any idea what the cerebral cortex does? Ms. Frizzle will show you! Ever wondered why you sneeze? The answer resides in this story!
"Inside the Human Body" deserves just as much, if not more, a home on a person's bookshelf as does "At the Waterworks" and "Inside the Earth." Cole and Degen loaded their latest adventure to the bursting-point with information. You can see the growth author and illustrator have taken since their inaugural effort with "At the Waterworks." They prove that some things do, indeed, get better with age.
At the end of "Inside the Human Body" is a true-false test to help readers distinguish what things were true in the story and what things were made up. And, of course, Ms. Frizzle drops another clue as to where her next great adventure will take us. I'm pretty sure the class will think of their next field trip as out of this world!
It doesn't seem possible, but Cole and Degen managed to improve upon an already-winning formula. They are both in top form with "Inside the Human Body," a field trip that will take you from the brain to the small intestine and back again. Well, what are you waiting for? Hitch a ride on the magic school bus!
As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "Seatbelts, everyone!"

One of our kids loves reading this book over and over. It's terrific in part because there are side notations outside the narrative story which add depth and can be optional on those nights when this is the last of many books to be read together.
