A profound book by a consistently profound author

In Huxley's books, its not just the plot that captivates. Huxley's insights on society and people are so on target and so truthful, it's amazing. His ability to translate truth into words is incredible. Point Counterpoint is no exception:

"Work's no more respectable than alcohol, and it serves exactly the same purpose: it just distracts the mind, makes a man forget himself. Work's simply a drug, that's all. It's humiliating that men shouldn't be able to live without drugs, soberly; it's humiliating that they shouldn't have the courage to see the world and themselves as they really are."

"But there is in debauchery something so intrinsically dull, something so absolutely and hopelessly dismal, that it is only the rarest beings, gifted with much less than the usual amount of intelligence and much more than the usual intensity of appetite, who can go on actively enjoying a regular course of vice or continue actively to believe in its wickedness."

"But the very possession of a body is a cynical comment on the soul and all its ways. It is a piece of cynicism, however, which the soul must accept, whether it likes it or no."

If these statements strike you as surprisingly truthful, then Huxley is for you.

The theme of Point Counterpoint concerns the mind/body dichotomy, which I think is really interesting. It makes you think about yourself a little differently than you may be used to.

Point, not counterpoint

Aldous Huxley's 1928 novel opens with a grand London party given by Lady Edward Tantamount. Music plays. Dozens of characters cross the stage, meet briefly, argue, and part. Some go on to a restaurant that stays open past midnight; there, they meet still more characters and argue some more; several of them continue to yet another party in the early hours of the morning. We are now 100 pages into the book, a quarter of the way through. The numerous characters will continue to bump into each other over the next days and months, but the essential texture of the opening will not change.

If you Google the title, the question comes back "Did you mean Point Counterpoint?" Well, no. Counterpoint is a musical term implying line and movement: two or more voices, intertwining with one another, echoing, developing, but never standing still. Huxley certainly understands that music implies movement -- his descriptions of actual music are superb -- but his method as a novelist is essentially static: to set characters off against one another, each of whom represents a different point of view. The book is thus a series of debates, some funny, some serious, all clever. But the characters ricochet off one another like balls on a pool table; this is truly a matter of point clashing with point; there is no line, little movement, and almost no plot.

Oddly enough, Huxley has one of his characters, a writer, criticize his own method: "Novel of ideas. The character of each personage must be implied, as far as possible, in the ideas of which he is the mouthpiece. In so far as theories are rationalizations of sentiments, instincts, dispositions of soul, this is feasible. The chief defect of the novel of ideas is that you must write about people who have ideas to express -- which excludes all but about .01 per cent of the human race." And again: "The great defect of the novel of ideas is that it's a made-up affair. Necessarily; for people who can reel off neatly formulated notions aren't quite real; they're slightly monstrous. Living with monsters becomes rather tiresome in the long run." He has it right; this book IS a made-up affair, it IS tiresome, and its .01 percent of the human race consists of a handful of English aristocrats and intellectuals -- Huxley as a kind of egghead Evelyn Waugh.

Several times, I almost tossed the book away, yet kept on reading -- why? The first time was when Huxley introduces Mark Rampion, a painter and would-be novelist closely based on his friend D. H. Lawrence. Here is a character who does not come from the upper classes, whose thoughts are three-dimensional and fully worked out, and whose unconventional yet bracing morality serves as a touchstone for the other characters in the book. The chapter describing his courtship is one of the few passages where the novel of ideas becomes one of feeling, and it was riveting. Although nothing quite like that chapter comes again, I kept on because I was often amused, sometimes challenged (Huxley is an erudite author who almost demands footnotes), and increasingly aware that I was reading something that was as close to source material on the period as I was likely to find. For Huxley does not confine himself to the social and amorous goings-on typical of an early Waugh book such as A HANDFUL OF DUST. He also addresses politics (both fascism and communism are represented), religion and its substitutes, philosophy, the arts, and science. Even sex gets analyzed with an almost scientific detachment: there is a long disquisition by one of the more despicable characters on the techniques of seduction, perversion, and spiritual degradation; another embarks on what must be the first examination in literature of the phrase "sleeping around". As a reference work, this is fascinating; I just wish it were a better novel. Interesting though the numerous points are, I could have done with some genuine counterpoint.

The information in the book came from a class that is taught in college. I enjoyed the historical background regarding the path the various vitamins have taken from their first discovery to when they were actually synthesized for general use. I think we often take for granted what we grow up with as a normal part of our lives and I remember hearing about taking vitamins my whole life. It's truly fascinating to learn about the many people it took to bring all this knowledge together. I'm grateful they persisted. This is a solid history with many illustrations from the various nutritional deficiencies that were causing all kinds of diseases throughout man's history.

The issue of liberalism is examined by modern thinkers.

This collection of articles from several prominent thinkers such as Berlin, Hayek, and Nozick, allowed for an all encompasing overview of issues facing both proponents and opponents of modern liberalism. General themes ranging from definitions of liberty to the role of the free-market in issues of distributive justice are examined. For a beginning or curious political thinker, this book offers an ideal overview for understanding the bigger, broader issues facing modern political thought.

Conflict of values: can we get along?

The liberals represented here are all Kantian rights-based liberals. Sandel describes them as "egalitarian liberals" and "libertarian liberals" [but Hayek has rejected the label "libertarian" : see WHY I AM NOT A CONSERVATIVE]. Rawls and Dworkin "advocate certain welfare rights that Hayek and Nozick oppose ..." [Since Hayek supports a safety net, this summary by Sandel needs amplification.] The critics all object to the radical individualism in the Kantian tradition. Some are communitarians, and Sandel says one is a "democratic socialist" and one a "traditional conservative." The critics are heirs of Hegel, Kant's great critic. [The fact that socialists and conservatives share criticisms of liberalism is also discussed by Hayek, op. cit.]

This is not about debates between today's American Republican and Democratic parties. Both of these parties are heirs of Enlightenment liberalism, and both violate, when in power, Hayek's principles of liberalism. As Hayek repeatedly urged, those who agree with his defense of liberty should call themselves liberals, not conservatives. The current corruption of the word for partisan purposes is a disservice to the political process. [Late in life, Hayek found it increasingly difficult to insist on calling himself a liberal -- one of the consequences of polarization between two "liberal" parties in the U.S. and the perversion of the term. He decided he was an "Old Whig" {op.cit.}, which opens a whole other can of worms!]

The true opponent of liberalism is conservatism, another word distorted in current usage [discussed by Hayek, op. cit.]. Not a topic of this book. An excellent account of the war of conservatism against liberalism is ENEMIES OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT by Darrin McMahon. Hayek said conservatism has nothing to contribute to the questions facing citizens of the modern state [op.cit.].

Bias? -- Sandel says that here are offered "examples of the communitarian, or republican alternatives" to "rights-based liberalism." But isn't the latter republican? Sandel says three selections "challenge the liberal view" -- does that mean that these critics are not liberals? One criticizes "conservative political theory" (Burke) and says nothing against political liberalism. The second criticizes the "modern consciousness" shaped by capitalism (one expression of liberalism), affirms the value of inalienable human rights and dignity, and dismisses the option of "a regressive restoration of traditional codes," but does not say anything about political liberalism. The third is the most acute criticism (Sandel, communitarian), a technical critique of Rawls; it affirms the value of understanding ourselves "as citizens of this republic" and claims to show the defect in liberalism, but I could not understand the argument (my limitation).

The lead essay is a classic by Isaiah Berlin, which merits multiple readings. He says there are " more than 200 senses of this protean word [freedom]" which illustrates the difficulty of political discourse. He pleads for "the empirical, as against the metaphysical, view of politics," and for a political arrangement that tolerates a pluralism of ultimate values that cannot be merged or submerged in a cultural unity without violating liberty.

The excerpt from Rawls contrasts utilitarianism with a politics guided by the principle of "justice as fairness." The excerpt omits his definition of a key concept, "the original position" behind "the veil of ignorance." [see Wikipedia: Original position].

Dworkin's excerpt is an analysis of liberal and conservative aims in current American politics and their philosophical bases. This helps clarify the evolution of political terms from "classical" to contemporary. The other essays are not about current politics, but are philosophical investigations.

Hayek, whom Sandel puts among the rights-based liberals, makes a powerful argument about the concept of equality. It does not get the rigorous criticism Rawls gets. I would like to have seen a response by a critic of Hayek liberalism.

Nozick makes a shocking observation (which I capitalize): "The existence of past injustice ... raises [a] major topic under justice in holdings [property]: the rectification of injustice in holdings ... I DO NOT KNOW OF A THOROUGH TREATMENT OF SUCH ISSUES [as] what may victims of injustice permissibly do in order to rectify the injustices" -- such as stealing the labor of one's slave ancestors. "[We need] a principle of rectification ... I shall not attempt that task here." His dilemma derives from his doctrine that only a minimal state is legitimate and "redistribution" is illegitimate without a strong argument from a principle of justice. Thus, a leading libertarian evades a key question of justice.

The excerpt from HEGEL by Charles Taylor is valuable background to the debate here between Kant and Hegel, between rights-based liberalism and communitarianism/socialism/conservatism. Taylor says Hegel has been misunderstood as producing "Prussianism, state worship, even proto-Fascism." Hegel's doctrine is that "morality reaches its completion in a community ...obligations are founded in our membership of some community." Hegel "provided the indispensable background for Marx's thought." These are the common themes of critics of liberalism, which aims to liberate individuals from overpowering forces of community and tradition.

Walzer, the "democratic socialist," criticizes market ideology and radical individualism. "... members of a political community owe one another communal provision of security and welfare ... [Needs are] elusive ... expansive .. voracious [and] subject to political limitations [only, not to] "merely philosophical stipulation."

Oakshott, the "traditional conservative," aims to redeem the phrase "political education," which has been corrupted to mean propaganda. Politics is "the activity of attending to the general arrangements of a set of people." How to do this has to be learned. Politics is "the exploration of a sympathy for what does not fully appear ... an incoherence in the arrangements of a society which pressed convincingly for remedy." The suggestion that only those with the requisite knowledge of our political heritage can guide politics may be conservative (and may be true), but I did not see anything here particularly conservative or critical of liberalism. It's a valuable caution to be modest in our political schemes.

There are varieties of liberalism and communitarianism (good articles in Wikipedia). Within each are significant differences. The tension between groups and within groups -- in other words, among the conflicting values and interests of citizens -- is beneficial, each correcting the excesses of the other. Liberalism opposes authoritarianism; communitarianism/socialism/conservatism remind us that we are creatures of a culture, a nation, a history. Perhaps the most informed and thoughtful citizen holds a mix of these contending values.

Very good book on one piece flow and mfg. cell layout

This book contains a great deal of very useful information on creating, or revising, manufacturing cells to reduce waste and improve productivity. The book contains a cogent explanation of the advantages of replacing batch processing with one piece flow processes. It is particularly good at describing how to improve production floor layouts to reduce the number of workers needed to manufacture products while introducing one piece flow. The information is there, but the text could be much clearer. A valuable addition to Shigeo Shingo's books on manufacturing.

A start on one piece flow production cells

Book info : I read the 1st English edition that was published in 1992.

Pre required knowledge: SMED

Purchased price : USD 39,90

General : The book is not very easy to read, the information you need is there but the text could be much clearer. Also the writer must like abbreviations, because he uses them a lot. In the end they were starting to get annoying.

Book content:

The book has got 2 parts. Part I handles the basic theoretical part (44% of book) and has got exercises (12%) The first part gives an unclear overview of the theory and then continues using the theory in case studies. Part II (44%) gives 4 applications:

1 Colour Changeover Improvement at a plastics company

2. Establishing one-piece flow at the oriental motor company

3. Single delivery at Mynac clothing company

4. Reducing waste on printed circuit board component assembly lines at Kumamoto Electronics

Because I work in the food processing industry I found the case studies and the applications in part two difficult to understand.

Two other things I would like to point out are:

A. If you maintain the same level of production but decrease the lot size you get more setup time / changeover. Therefore the book can't avoid SMED en Zero changeover principles; actually quit a lot of the book is spend on this topic but I found Shingo's book on this topic much better.

B. While transforming the production process into U cells the writer adds new equipment to the lines / cells, sometimes up to twice as much, as if equipment is falling out of the sky!

One Piece Flow Cell Design

This book does an excellent job of explaining how lean or Toyota Production System (TPS) cells are designed. It covers all of the principles and has many examples. If you are designing work cells or need to understand their design, this is a book you should read and keep handy.
