About the Author
Clark Spencer Larsen heads the Department of Anthropology at Ohio State University, Columbus. A native of Nebraska, he received his B.A. from Kansas State University and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Clark’s research is in bioarchaeology, skeletal biology, and paleoanthropology. He has worked in North America, Europe, and Asia. He has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Northern Illinois University, Purdue University, and the University of North Carolina. Since 2001, he has been a member of the faculty at Ohio State, where he is a Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He teaches introductory physical anthropology, osteology, bioarchaeology, and paleoanthropology. Clark has served as president of the American Associations of Physical Anthropologists and as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. In addition to Our Origins, he has authored or edited 25 books and monographs, including Bioarchaeology; Interpreting Behavior from the Human Skeleton, Skeletons in Our Closet, Advances in Dental Anthropology; and A Companion to Biological Anthropology.

Easy To Read, Easy To Understand

This is great for the beginning Anthropologist. It's been used in one of my classes and was, as far as textbooks go, very easy to read and comprehend. Even for someone interested in just the basics or looking to add to their knowledge base will like this.

In 1845, Atlanta was the last stop at the end of a railroad line, the home of just twelve families and three general stores. By the 1860s, it was a thriving Confederate city, second only to Richmond in importance. A Changing Wind is the first history to explore the experiences of Atlanta’s civilians during the young city’s rapid growth, the devastation of the Civil War, and the Reconstruction era when Atlanta emerged as a “New South” city.

A rich and compelling account of residents’ changing loyalties to the Union and the Confederacy, the book highlights the unequal economic and social impacts of the war, General Sherman’s siege, and the stunning rebirth of the city in postwar years. The final chapter of the book focuses on Atlanta’s historical memory of the Civil War and how racial divisions have led to separate commemorations of the war’s meaning.

The real Gone with the Wind

If you are a film buff or a Civil War history buff, you will find this a fascinating read. I do confess that while reading, I was comparing the text with the visions of Gone With the Wind.
The Civil War had disasterous consequences for the South. After an auspicious beginning, by 1863, the true toll was becoming only too evident in human and commercial costs. Atlanta, a community that had started to grow in the 1850's was supercharged when war was declared. It had so many things going for it, including location, that it became a hub. In fact, it was the second most important city in the South. With growth came wealth and Atlanta flourished in the early stages. Even the Unionists either supported the Confederate cause or stayed under the radar. By the third year, deprivations were felt by all and the flood of human misery swarming the city made life less pleasant. But it was not until the city was threatened by the Union forces that things got truly nasty.
We have seen the burning of Atlanta, thanks to David O Selznick, but the tales of the event, in the words of those who were impacted, are equally, if not more, powerful..
Ms. Venet has done an admirable job lacing together the stories of Atlantans during her rise, her pre-eminence and her emergence from the ashes like a phoenix after the war. It is sad that so little of what was there before no longer exists. Thanks to books such as this, we can still appreciate what that world was like.

Atlanta, Then and Now

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Venet at an event at the Atlanta History Center and purchased A Changing Wind from a local bookstore. The narrative in this book is brilliant. She weaves a story line which tells us of Old Atlanta and how the town has evolved into the global city we love today. This is a book for anyone who loves history or contemporary. I highly recommend it.

The best statistics text I've ever used

This was the core text for both semesters of my graduate level statistics classes back in the '70s. The text was very understandable and the examples were most helpful. I am now an MD doing clinical research at a medical school and this is STILL the best statistics reference I've ever come across. ...

classic introductory statistics book

Snedecor first wrote this excellent elementary applied text while at Iowa State (late 1940s or early 1950s). When Bill Cochran arrived in Iowa he helped out with the revision. It was very popular and was revised by Cochran many times even after Snedecor died.

Well written and often used in elementary courses this book is also a good reference source for statistical methods. Empahsis in applied statistics in those days was in agricultural experiments and that is the reason statistics was prominent at Iowa State University in those days.

Good Basic Intro

I am the type that likes to learn independently - see how much I can do before going to others.

This book was great for that learning style - there are lots of examples and all the components of the calculations are there to see so you can undertand how the equations work without requiring a lot of extra research.

This is one of the books that I have continuously referenced.

entertaining reading, but has a weak plot

The story concerns childhood bullies, childhood friendship, and childhood romance--themes well familiar to the intended audience. But the writer relies on some improbabilities to keep the story moving:

--Why does Harry become infatuated with our lovely Korean heroine? Because she brings a frog to school, and frogs are icky, and Harry likes anything that is icky.

--How does the narrator learn of Harry's secret? Because love notes keep falling out of his pocket.

--Why is our heroine so averse to people fighting with each other? Because her uncle was killed in the Korean War, which took place long before any children living today were even born.

It's a nice story, though.

An adult can read this book in a half-hour.

I loved this story

I loved this story. I love alpha males and take no s*** type heroines and this story did not disappoint. Eric is so use to having his way that Persephone's stubbornness knocks him for a loop. These two are hot when they are fighting.....when they stop fighting and start.... you know.. the heat elevates to the very next level. The sex scenes in this story jump off the page and happen right before your eyes they're so smoldering. I was so in love with these characters that I was disappointed I read the book so quickly. Pick up this book and see exactly why these two are immortals!

I found the female lead character annoying and whiney. I had moments when I channeled the gamekeeper in Jurassic Park (Shoot her!). I liked the rest of the series but this one was I could have skipped.

Love the Kyriakis Pack

I thought it was good. I like reading about the characters from this series. I liked Persephone. As the only daughter of an Alpha, you expect her to be headstrong, stubborn, and used to getting her way. If she were any less, would you respect her? With that being said, I felt for her because she, like all of us, hates being told what to do. Eric...how could any one say no? Strong, fair, loves his family and handsome, who doesn't want some of that? These are characters that I like and hope to see again because they are just gettin' started.
