An excellent first chess book choice!
By eyetoe
Given the authors previous work which targets younger chess students and teachers, this book has a broad audience. I have consumed a ton of chess books in the last year in search of a clear path to improvement, and I wish I had found this book first.

There is a critical balance struck in this book. There are sufficient examples given while not flooding the reader with endless variations. The informal dialog is easy to read and targets how real people can approach the game and improve. It's uncommon to find a chess book that is a `page-turner' where the chess student can find accessible insights on every page, but this book clearly fits that description.

The author has a way of getting ideas I've read before into my head in a way that stick and are internalized, and while making it seem easy and obvious.

By comparison I've looked at Kotov's `How to think like a grandmaster' and Soltis' `How to choose a chess move' which both address the fundamental process of thinking during a chess game. It might take months of active study to consume these books about this specific topic, while a quick review of the authors section on `How To Think' might be the most valuable 15 minutes you spend on chess study!

If you ask around about how to get the most out of studying chess book, it's generally accepted that you don't `read' a chess book, you need to `work through' a chess book for it to have true value. It's revelatory that this book embraces this and takes the `workbook' approach which seems natural and effective.

For readers of all ages I would certainly recommend this book as a solid first real chess book, or an invaluable guide for tuning up gaps in a more experienced player.

Clear and practical chess workbook
By Mark B
This book is a welcome addition to the extensive library of books on the ancient game of chess. The target audience is the young, intermediate chess player, one who already understands well the basics of the game and is ready to advance to the next level. This book is full of readily absorbed concepts, such as the discussion in the first chapter about what environment each type of piece "likes" and "dislikes".

Each concept and strategy is backed up with a wealth of examples from actual chess games. These problems naturally build on each other with increasing complexity and subtlety. The solutions are provided and discussed at the back of the book.

Appendix B is particularly imaginative and helpful. It is entitled "How To Think" and lays out a clear and careful strategy for how to think about the game as it is progressing and what exactly to focus on when it is your move and when it is your opponent's move. This strategy keeps the clock in mind and provides a very workable recipe for the effective use of your pondering time.

Throughout, the book is written informally, with the young reader in mind. The author never talks down to his audience, yet he keeps his young readers in mind by keeping the discussions clear and practical. I should note that though I am not young, I found the book a very enjoyable and informative read. There are no age barriers for this material.

For the right type of enthusiastic chess student, young or old, this is the perfect workbook to fill in the gaps in his or her understanding of chess, to provide the framework for an increasingly strategic level of play, and to lay the foundation for years of enjoyment playing chess.

Awesome for intermediate adults like me
By grandjmo
After playing chess for over 44 years (at the Class C level) and not having been professionally trained, in addition to being unable to process other books that I have picked up to learn new strategies, this book is amazing in it's ability to explain and test a large variety of ideas and chess concepts that I knew I should know. This book is well organized and thought out and is chaulk full of chess strategies. It is the only book that I have seen that clearly explains what the chess player should be thinking about during the game at each stage and how to put concepts together to develop the proper strategy. The problem sets at the end of each chapter are clearly explained in detail at the back of the book. I highly recommend this book to the intermediate level chess player.

this book is a great one stop shop
By Murray Eiland
Nothing stuffy about this Nobel winner! If you ever wanted to know about how science can be creative, this book is a great one stop shop. The story is easy to follow because it is real, clearly not embellished. I finished it in a day of pleasure.

"long pretelevision days of evolution"
By cxlxmx
This book, Dancing Naked in the Mind Field, was so enthralling that I almost read it through literally in one sitting after randomly flipping it open and sitting down to finish the paragraph I first set my eyes on. I came to Amazon excited to give it a positive review and was surprised to find the high number of negative reviews. As far as I can tell, many of the negative reviewers don't understand the author or the point of this book.

Reviewers who describe Mullis as a sloppy, irresponsible scientist who just got lucky need to reflect on the fact that he was recruited by Cetus (the company he was working at when he developed PCR), which also saw fit to put him in charge of a research team. This was all before the Nobel prize; he was making traditional professional progress without celebrity.

One of the things that's clear from the book is that Mullis has a deep life-long concern with systemic power structures and the way they warp both our lives and scientific research. So, for example, critics of his views on HIV/AIDS fail to see that he took a position on the topic after one of his friends was ostracized from the professional community for having the "wrong" views in the early days when AIDS research was new and less settled. The same is true of the OJ Simpson trial, which excited Mullis less because he thought so highly of OJ than because he wanted a chance to take down the enormous and overwhelmingly powerful bureaucracy of the LA prosecutor's office. Likewise, astrology is less about whether the stars affect our personality than about the largely unscientific and ineffective field of mental health.

The other face of Mullis' anti-institutional views is a type of humanism, which leads him to say things that, frankly, make perfect sense to me. NASA spends huge amounts of money on the shuttle program and international space station. What the heck are we getting out of it? Why don't we focus first on figuring out how to protect ourselves from natural threats (like the decimation of life from an asteroid impact) before figuring out how to set up a Mars colony. A Mars colony might be exciting, but it's not very practical and isn't doing anything for the man on the street. At one point, he suggests we might just be better off with priests of medieval religion than with priests of modern science. This is similar to the criticisms Nassim Taleb has been making of our priests of Wall Street, and I think it makes sense.

The writing is fast-moving and humor-filled, although inconsistent. I don't know who came up with the clunky title, but most of the book is wittier. He discusses the fact that his wife Nancy encouraged him in writing this book and then edited it. Some parts about PCR are dumbed down versions of his Nobel Prize lecture, so I suspect his wife encouraged him to write something that would be accessible to the general public but still get across his message that we should turn off the TV, do good science, and enjoy the ride.

A Fleeting Glimpse of a True Scientist, American and Thinker
By D. Donohue
I love and hate this book at the same time. Kary Mullis is absolutely brilliant. His pragmatic thinking, scientific integrity, and bruising rationality are a rarity in a dumbed down world where pop science has replaced anything resembling the pure pursuit of scientific truth. And it is this fact that makes the book so good and yet so agonizing. Dr Mullis presents clear lines of logic on a number of common topics, that challenge everything you thought you knew, yet seem so undeniably right and logical. His ability to simply convey scientific concepts is rivaled only by his no holds barred descriptions of a life thoroughly lived and far from the conventional. To the extent that it excites, entertains, and teaches you, it will simultaneously disappoint you with truths and honest assessments of the world that Mullis makes no attempt to sugar coat. While you, like me, may love this book, at some point you will hate Mullis for being both so honest and so right. Nonetheless, such a fresh perspective in an otherwise pulp, pop and carbon copy world, provides an entertainment experience that would make even the best novelist envious. Mullis gives us a peek into the Taboo, reflections on topics, you've probably never thought much about, and compelling arguments against things you swore were fact. The fact that so much of it is true only adds to the intrigue. Whether you are a scientist, or everyman, thinker or casual observer, this book has something to entertain, enlighten and challenge you. A must read. This book is just fantastic.

Move First, Think Later: Sense and Nonsense in Improving Your Chess, 2nd Edition, by Willy Hendriks

The chess playing mind does not work like a machine. Selecting a move results from rather chaotic thought processes and is not the logical outcome of applying a rational method.
The only problem with that, says International Master Willy Hendriks, is that most books and courses on improving at chess claim exactly the opposite. The dogma of the chess instruction establishment is that if you only take a good look at certain ‘characteristics’ of a position, then good moves will follow more or less automatically.

But this is not how it happens. Chess players, weak and strong, don’t first judge the position, then formulate a plan and afterwards look at moves. It all happens at the same time, and pretending that it is otherwise is counterproductive. There is no use in forcing your students to mentally jump through theoretical hoops, according to experienced chess coach Hendriks.

This work shows a healthy distrust of accepted methods to get better at chess. It teaches that winning games does not depend on ticking off a to-do list when looking at a position on the board. It presents club and internet chess players with loads of much-needed no-nonsense training material. In this provocative, entertaining and highly instructive book, Hendriks shows how you can travel light on the road to chess improvement!

Review
One of the most original chess books the judges have seen for a number of years. Both serious and highly entertaining at the same time.
(Judges of English Chess Federation)

What a fantastic book! I have not enjoyed reading an instructional book so much in years. I was laughing out loud throughout, because it is very witty, but it is also a really important instructional volume.

(Steve Giddins)

Hendriks uses many new examples to make his point. A very entertaining and provocative read. I'm sure readers will improve their chess.
(International Master Arthur van de Oudeweetering ChessVibes)

I can't really express just how much I enjoyed Move First Think Later by Willy Hendriks.

(Mark Crowther The Week In Chess)

For anyone interested in chess in a broader context, I highly recommend reading Move First, Think Later by Willy Hendriks. (Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura)

Really a fantastic book, loaded with fresh ideas and excellent examples. After reading this book you will feel like Neo in the film The Matrix, when he discovers that his life so far was an illusion and that his real life will start only now.

Witty, thought-provoking, and instructive
By Christopher J. Falter
In this collection of miniature essays, International Master Willy Hendriks presents the implications of recent advances in cognitive science for chess players and trainers. Hendriks is the little boy who, observing the parade of standard chess pedagogy, cries out that the king is in fact naked. While he is not afraid to name names, this is no diatribe; his playful wit and pithy phrases make this book a fun and instructive journey. (I don't think his cat really got to expert level after a year of chess lessons, but it was a fun way to talk about how talent might prevail over deliberate practice!)

Hendriks aims his empirical fire at several deeply cherished notions in the chess community:

* The right thinking process over the board will make you strong.
* Develop a good long-range plan before you think about specific moves.
* Follow adages, such as "respond to a flank attack with a central counterattack."
* Trainers know the right methods of chess improvement.
* Anyone can become an international master with 10,000 hours of deliberate practice.
* Pay attention to your recent results to figure out where you are and what's working.

Citing the research that shows grandmasters don't analyze more deeply than experts, but use their memories much more intensively during a game, Hendriks concludes that our subconscious engages in matching candidate maneuvers to a reservoir of patterns to find a good move. This is why a chess player does not really engage in rational thought, or long-range planning, before looking around for good moves. After the game he might provide a narrative for what happened, but the ensuing narrative does not necessarily reflect his actual thinking during the game.

Hendriks draws a helpful analogy between playing chess and having a conversation; just as you do not draw up a long-range plan in the middle of a conversation, you do not draw up a long-range plan before examining candidate chess moves. You might have some idea of where you want to go (as you do when you speak), but it's not easily verbalized in the midst of the game (or conversation). Moreover, just as a 7 year-old can speak quite competently by virtue of having absorbed the details of language without any training in the rules of grammar or punctuation, you grow in chess ability primarily by absorbing, via play and training, thousands of typical maneuvers.

Thus if you want to play better chess you must "feed the beast," your chess-playing subconscious brain, with a steady diet of chess patterns from master games and analysis of your own games. Hendriks provides a wealth of novel and really useful training ideas for this process, any one of which would justify the price of purchase. My favorite, and one that I've started using, is the practice of entering into the game score the candidate moves you (or your opponent) didn't play so your chess engine can provide an impartial, expert evaluation of the moves' soundness.

Hendriks illustrates his ideas with a wealth of positions and game fragments, so you're developing more chess skill while you learn about the process of developing chess skill. Nice!

Like pretty much any author that challenges long-held paradigms, Hendriks occasionally overstates his point. Hendriks disparages the advocates of plans and adages because verbal protocols don't really help us find good moves during a game. True enough, but on the other hand they might serve very effectively as meta-patterns that help our chess-playing brains acquire and make use of thousands of specific maneuvers/patterns. Here Hendriks' analogy to language learning is apropos, because familiarity with grammar, verb conjugations, and noun declensions (the meta-patterns or rules of language) can help you master a language. As high school language courses demonstrate, mastering the meta-patterns does you no good without putting in the hard work of using the language in live situations--listening to native speakers, asking them questions, and getting feedback on your mistakes. In this sense Hendriks' cautions about verbal protocols in chess are correct. But as I discovered when I was mastering Arabic, knowing the rules of the language when you hear a new word or phrase helps you recognize what's going on, and helps you use that word or phrase in the future. The same applies to chess, I think: knowing the language of tactics, evaluation, and typical plans (the meta-patterns) can help you categorize, absorb, and make use of the specific bits of chess knowledge you encounter. Thus the works of planning and adage advocates like Kotov and Silman can have real value, as long as you apply them with a substantial grain of salt.

In addition, Hendriks' insists that talent is just as important as deliberate practice without providing any empirical evidence. Upon first reading, I thought that Andersson's study of Berlin music students, a fine empirical work and the basis of several popular works on deliberate practice, must carry the day against Hendriks. But with a couple of hours of googling, I discovered that Campitelli and Gobet's 2007 study of Argentinian chess players had clinched the point for the importance of talent. (Search for "Mastering Chess: Deliberate Practice Is Necessary but Not Sufficient.") Hambrick and Meinz' 2011 study comparing the influence of "working memory" (native brain capability) with that of deliberate practice on music sight-reading could also be cited. Hendriks could have made his point much more clearly and successfully if he had cited these studies.

In spite of these imperfections, though, Hendriks' work is so refreshing, novel, and useful that I must give it my highest recommendation for anyone who enjoys chess.

Note: The publisher provided a copy of this book to me in exchange for my honest review. My ratings of the publisher's books have ranged from 3 stars to 5 stars.

Theory of mind meets chess = bad news for the aging chess brain!
By Igelfeld
It's not very often that an entire book is summarized by the title, but this is such a book. The outrageous title is the author's way of making a point that is actually quite old or namely if you expose your brain to good moves in a given position, your brain will assimilate this into it's inner processing and help you choose the best move.

The book is filled with psychology, philosophy, and quite frankly opinion. The basic idea really is that many of the conventional approaches to chess improvement simply are contrived and hard to implement into a clear and coherent method for OTB play. I can't argue with him on that having read many (hundreds) of chess books. The author argues that making a plan is close to non-sensical because very few people can see how a game might morph too far in advance. He also is highly critical of "advice" given by authors who are trying to shape the thinking of their book-reading students. Jeremy Silman is heavy target of Hendriks because of his "advice-like" style of chess instruction. But to be fair, the author rejects almost all chess advice given in books and instead himself just advises "pick a good move".

He spends most of the book trying to justify this approach and it relies heavily on his work on the theory of mind. I tend to think he's on to something here and it really is based on force feeding the brain with well-annotated games. The idea being that if you see a good example of an idea that is tactically possible, you'll consider it yourself and hopefully calculate correctly if it works in your position. So, this is good for young developing brains, but not so great for aging chess brains (probably over 25), and if true, means that you can't expect to really advance much as an aging chess player (again, anyone over 25). My guess is that statistically this is somewhat true. And the only hope that you might have if you're over 25 is if your brain has already had to do a similarly kind of processing for some other activity (and can get those synaps firing despite your age).

So, why just 4 stars?

The book simply does not really address enough elements of chess to be complete. For example, you certainly can't do the "move first, think later" mechanism playing correspondence chess. I can tell you right now that you'll lose. In other words, the iterative process doesn't fit well within this outlook. In fact, this highlights a problem even with his initial thesis and mantra. For example, many chess players will be drawn to an idea or move and then iterate based on the problems associated with evaluating that move. This is the basis of the book Imagination in Chess and really more accurately represents how a chess player works through candidate moves. This really isn't developed during the book which subsequently leaves some fairly large holes. In addition, his criticism of authors like Silman, Soltis, Watson (coincidence that they're all Americans?) is really unfair, even if there is more than a strand of truth to some of the criticism. Silman is trying to connect with players who are trying to learn chess without spending hundreds of hours on the internet teaching their brains the right patterns etc.. I personally think that Silman's treatment of imbalance in positions is amongst the best in chess material. The author correctly states that it's too much to think consciously about features of a position, but at some point, you need some instruction that gives you the over-arching idea. Often game collections, written by strong IMs and GMs, don't think (and subsequently express) the positional features that their brain knew and then communicate to the learning student. An excellent book is Chess Blueprints because it not only provides the examples to program your chess brain, but provides the meta-idea that hopefully you can apply in your games.

So, as a wrap-up, this is a book that should be read by any aspiring chess student, and if you put the work in, you'll improve your chess by doing the things that the author sugggests (studying well-annotated games, studying middle game positions to find a good move, using a computer to analyze your games to provide the corrective feedback for your brain. The author does have a dry sense of humor, but I don't believe that Steve Giddins laughed all the way through the book. The book is very readable without a chess board and this is what I consider a "quick" chess read (less than a week or two). But if you don't like psychology, philosophy, or think that Stephen Pinker is a destabilizing force in academic thought (he is the one that advised Larry Summors, then president of Harvard, that girls were not predisposed to be good at science), you might want to take a pass on this book. But I will say that this book supports the data that has young kids playing thousands of hours on the internet and working their way up to strong players very quickly. Of course this is a bit depressing for the rest of us who are past 25 and can only expect "modest to little" improvement if Hendrik's theory is correct.

Finally, a sensible book on how to get better at chess
By Jim Rickman
I think this book is fantastic. Rather than giving artificial rules on analyzing positions, the author emphasizes that what really matters is your repertoire of patterns. This is gained with a lot of experience at the chess board, playing your own games and going over and analyzing GM games.
This is what I try to do on a daily basis:
1) Play at least 3 games each day on the internet. First, analyze them on your own and write down the thoughts you had during the game. Then, run it by a strong chess program. Make note of any chess patterns you find interesting. Are they similar to patterns you recall in a GM game?
2) Choose at least 3 GM games from the active strong GM chess tournaments being contested. Two of these games should come from the realm of your own opening repertoire (one as White, one as Black). The third game should come from an opening/defense that you are not familiar with. Thoroughly analyze at least two of these games on your own and with a strong chess program. What you want to experience is as many different types of positions as possible. This way, you'll increase your repertoire of chess patterns. During your own games, your unconscious will access these patterns and feed your thinking. The more you do such practice, the stronger, wiser, and more intuitive you'll become as a chess player.
3) As bedtime reading, get a chess book which presents chess positions to solve.
If you do this on a daily basis, you will be guaranteed to become a difficult player for your opponents to play against.

Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film (Princeton Classics), by Carol J. Clover

From its first publication in 1992, Men, Women, and Chain Saws has offered a groundbreaking perspective on the creativity and influence of horror cinema since the mid-1970s. Investigating the popularity of the low-budget tradition, Carol Clover looks in particular at slasher, occult, and rape-revenge films. Although such movies have been traditionally understood as offering only sadistic pleasures to their mostly male audiences, Clover demonstrates that they align spectators not with the male tormentor, but with the females tormented--notably the slasher movie's "final girls"--as they endure fear and degradation before rising to save themselves. The lesson was not lost on the mainstream industry, which was soon turning out the formula in well-made thrillers.

Including a new preface by the author, this Princeton Classics edition is a definitive work that has found an avid readership from students of film theory to major Hollywood filmmakers.

Review
"[A] brilliant analysis of gender and its disturbances in modern horror films. . . . Bubbling away beneath Clover's multi-faceted readings of slasher, occult, and rape-revenge films is the question of what the viewer gets out of them. . . . [She] argues that most horror films are obsessed with feminism, playing out plots which climax with an image of (masculinized) female power and offering visual pleasures which are organized not around a mastering gaze, but around a more radical "victim-identified' look."--Linda Ruth Williams, Sight and Sound

"Carol Clover's compelling [book] challenges simplistic assumptions about the relationship between gender and culture. . . . She suggests that the "low tradition' in horror movies possesses positive subversive potential, a space to explore gender ambiguity and transgress traditional boundaries of masculinity and femininity."--Andrea Walsh, The Boston Globe

"Clover makes a convincing case for studying the pulp-pop excesses of 'exploitation' horror as a reflection of our psychic times."--Misha Berson, San Francisco Chronicle

"Clover actually bothers (as few have done before) to go into the theaters, to sit with the horror fans, and to watch how they respond to what appears on screen."--Wendy Lesser, Washington Post

"In her reading of both particular horror films and of film and gender theory, Clover does what every cultural critic hopes to: she calls into question our habits of seeing."--Ramona Naddaff, Artforum

"Clover, takes the most extreme genre, horror flicks, seriously. There is no condescension in this significant and probing discussion of psychology and sexuality and their role in lurid fantasy."--Desmond Ryan, Philadelphia Inquirer

"Fascinating, Clover has shown how the allegedly naïve makers of crude films have done something more schooled directors have difficulty doing - creating females with whom male veiwers are quite prepared to identify with on the most profound levels"--The Modern Review

"It's easy to see why this book is considered such a landmark in film analysis."--Rod Lott, Flick Attack

From the Back Cover
Gender In The Modern Horror Film. Do the pleasures of horror movies really begin and end in sadism? So the public discussion of film assumes, and so film theory claims. Carol Clover argues, however, that these films work mainly to engage the viewer in the plight of the victim-hero - the figure, often a female, who suffers pain and fright but eventually rises to vanquish the forces of oppression.

About the Author
Carol J. Clover is the Class of 1936 Professor Emerita in the departments of rhetoric, film, and Scandinavian at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The Medieval Saga.

Darkly Rewarding
By kathari1349
This was a book that I read in its original release in 92, and I can say that I have found few analysis of the horror genre that is as engaging, and thought provoking as this. I would rank it along side some other exceptional works, such as Lovecraft's essay "Supernatural Horror In Literature". (Though, of course, the two address different artistic modes of the horror genre.)
Much academic discourse on film can come across as contrived and affected; often doctrinaire as well. But, Clover's tone is never comes across like that. Though, her language is academic, her approach is, in my opinion, more existential. She aims at not only intellectual analysis, but grapples with the visceral impact of images and moods invoked in these films.
Her feminist approach, in my opinion, enhances her dialogue, rather than hampers it. I found this refreshing, in that any kind of ideological commitment can sometimes compromise intellectual honesty. But, what Clover has to say goes beyond any bare, dogmatism, without compromising any integrity.
I was very pleased that in her new introduction she deals with something that I have observed myself. Namely, that the "Final Girl" concept has become somewhat distorted by pop-culture handling of it. Clover's original formulations on this were more ambivalent, and detailed, than the simple notion that the Final Girl was an unequivocally positive template. Though, she was one of the first authors to acknowledge that the generalized condemnation of the horror genre as misogynistic was a mistake, it did not prevent her from dealing with the real misogyny that does appear in the genre. And, yes, she did point out that the Final Girl focus of so many horror films was capable of generating empathy with the female character. But, these are only the broad outlines. The devil is in the details as they say, so I encourage any horror fan who has gotten to the know the Final Girl idea through second-hand sources, to buy this book, and get the real picture.
One thing that I would particularly like to point out here, is that Clover's area of academic expertise is the Norse Sagas, Germanic Myths, etc. I am of the opinion that the tragic, and gender themes of the Sagas helped her in appreciating certain nuances of horror films. I have often observed that many horror stories closely parallel tragic themes. And, in some cases, the dividing line between a horror story, and a tragedy is not always clear.
A great example would be Stephen King's "The Dead Zone". Though, there are certainly a great number of horrific images and ideas, the rendering of John Smith is that of a tragic hero. As well, when we look at past examples of great tragedies of the theater, we have the often terrifying images that occur in plays such as "Macbeth", with its pandemonium of blood, monstrous and haunting apparitions, and black nightmares.
As to the subject of gender, the Sagas present some worthy oddities, there as well. Though, profoundly misogynistic in many ways, the ancient Germanic legends, and the Norse myths also reflected a great deal of ambivalence about gender. More often than not, in its critical mode, the Norse Saga was apt to be more misanthropic than misogynistic. It should be recalled that the play "Hamlet" was modeled off a Norse legend of a Prince Amlethus. And, it is in from the mouth of Hamlet that we hear not only caustic condemnations of female character, ("frailty thy name is woman"), but equally damning appraisals of male character, ("We are errant knaves all; believe none of us.")
The only regret I have is the I really wish that Clover would release a new edition. Given what she had already written in the original, about the slasher genre in particular, it would be fascinating to see her take on the many changes in the genre. I would love to see her deal with the meta-movie idea, ushered in by the "Scream" franchise, and the other permutations that horror films have undergone.

At any rate, I say it again. If you're a horror fan, get this book; read it. You will come away with a enhanced appreciation for the genre, and the detailed themes it can invoke.

Intriguing insights into the horror movie genre
By Mr. Richard K. Weems
Holy frijoles, this book presents an intriguing view of gender challenges in the tradition of horror flicks. Though Clover's primary focus is on the 70s/80s era of slasher films, it's interesting to see her ideas still at play and even extended--that this book itself has helped evolve the horror genre. Maybe it hasn't evolved in the post positive of directions, but we ARE talking horror, people, and Clover's analyses lay a spectacular groundwork of gender challenges and sexual incapabilities that drive so many films. While her ideas about the Final Girl, the female who survives and sometimes even succeeds against the killer and represents the female victim of the movie viewers as well, is what put this book on the map, Clover also examines quite adeptly possession films, rape-revenge, and also the assaulting perspective of horror films. A fascinating read.

And in this daily devotional, she offers young women the encouragement they need to join her in living a life of all-out purity. It's not just about sex. It's about mind, body, and spirit.
This 90-day devotional proves that purity is anything but old-fashioned and boring. It's edgy and relevant. Rebecca lives it--and readers can live it too. It starts with Day 1 . . . and ends with everyday radical living.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
By BOOK WHIZ
Rebecca St. James has earned her stripes as a Christian "cultural warrior" whose young voice has spearheaded a positive move towards spiritual values for her generation and beyond. "Pure" presents a complete personal lifestyle-approaching purity of spirit, mind, and body in a refreshingly honest and deeply moving format that deals with real life issues. Rebecca takes her readers on an intimate day-to-day walk--presented in her own voice with personal insights on her own challenges and victories. She ultimately offers readers real wisdom and encouragement in living a lifestyle that's both counter cultural and totally exhilarating in its' freshness of purpose. On the 90 journey,Rebecca tunes into the dynamics of today's culture with a challenge to join her--a challenge backed by solid biblical principals and very thought provoking "looking futher" and "living it out" sections with each devotional that make this book perfect for group bible study and discussion. I would recommend for teens, 20's and beyond. Bravo!"
