Spellbinding story with a lot of heart!
By Anne in Virginia
While all Melissa’s books contain deep love, this book stands out as the one with the most heart. Truman Gritt is a man that faced down his demons and a prison sentence and rose from the ashes victorious. While he didn’t escape unscathed, he didn’t lose his ability to love and to love with everything he had. A protector to the core, he fights for everyone he loves. Gemma’s heart rivals the size of Truman’s. She takes Truman and his siblings into her heart and holds them close, completes them. Gemma and Truman come from opposite worlds, but together they make a family full of love, loyalty and heart. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! This book is absolutely amazing!
By Xtymom
I know I've said it before, but there was no way I was putting this book down for anything. I got it at midnight and read straight through. This book is absolutely amazing! I think Tru Blue has to be the best book I've read in so long. The paintings and sketches and their descriptions were incredible. And the descriptions of Tru's tattoos and what they meant, all of those just killed me. Melissa Foster is an incredibly talented writer to draw so many emotions out while reading those scenes. I felt like I was living his pain and his redemption. I know I'm talking right now, but I really am at a loss for words over this whole book. It's just that good! And Gemma and everything she went through, I just can't imagine it and she is so loving and caring. Each thing she revealed about her childhood just devastated me, just like with Tru. Tru's interactions with Kennedy and Lincoln and how much he loves and protects them instantly after learning about them is so touching and heart warming. He melts my heart every time he lovingly looks at or even touches them. The game that Tru and Gemma played was so sweet and touching. I cried so many times while reading this because it's so heart wrenching, gritty and powerful. Wow!! I love Melissa's Bradens and all the rest, but this book is just...Wow!!

TRUMAN GRITT, PROTECTOR, BROTHER, FATHER AND LOVER
By Maria Ria Alexander
Melissa Foster has written an absolutely spellbinding story about a man who has sacrificed everything for his family, includng his own happiness. She has such a way with her words in this story that I was unable to put the book down - it would have to be the best novel of hers that I have read, and believe me, I have read nearly all of them. It is a story of heartache, betrayal, loyalty, firendship and most importantly love. It is one that will pull at your heartstrings and have you so angry that you could throw your book across the room. You will laugh, cry, be shocked and amazed and feel passion and desire.

Truman "Tru" Gritt was a man I fell in love with. Coming from a family that was terribly broken, Tru has become fiercely protective of those he grows to love and care for. From the opening chapter, where Tru's life changes dramatically to the final one where he has finally managed to obtain all that he has ever wanted, this man won my heart. His fierce protective instincts combined with his gentle nature are what endeared him to me. He was quite simply a fighter with a heart of gold. A man who met the true love of his life by sheer accident and in quite funny circumstances.

Gemma Wright, a strong young woman who was fighting a battle of her own. Gemma left her family behind and moved to a new town to begin a new life - one which she could be proud of. She owns a local Princess shop, where she holds "princess parties". But Gemma has a heartbreaking pain that she lives with daily, her inability to have children. She meets Tru and together they become the family that they have both always desired. There are numerous funny circumstances between the two, but it is the heat and the desire between them that really got my heart pumping. These two together are enough to make a volcano explode.

Just when life seems to be floating along nicely, Tru's past comes back to haunt him. He has already told Gemma one of his secrets, but he has not told her the largest one - afraid that she will no longer want to remain with him. But his secret is told - and not by him. Will this revelation tear the two apart? Can Tru leave his past behind him and forge a future together with Gemma?

This book was exceptional. One that will always remain close to my heart. It is so much more than a romance story, it is a story of the greatest kind of love that a person can have - understanding and acceptance of another's past.

I cannot wait to read more from Melissa Foster, especially if she is going to write about some of the supporting characters in this novel.

FIVE STARS are fully deserved for this magnificent story.

Reading and the Victorians (The Nineteenth Century Series), by Juliet John

What did reading mean to the Victorians? This question is the key point of departure for Reading and the Victorians, an examination of the era when reading underwent a swifter and more radical transformation than at any other moment in history. With book production handed over to the machines and mass education boosting literacy to unprecedented levels, the norms of modern reading were being established. Essays examine the impact of tallow candles on Victorian reading, the reading practices encouraged by Mudie's Select Library and feminist periodicals, the relationship between author and reader as reflected in manuscript revisions and corrections, the experience of reading women's diaries, models of literacy in Our Mutual Friend, the implications of reading marks in Victorian texts, how computer technology has assisted the study of nineteenth-century reading practices, how Gladstone read his personal library, and what contemporary non-academic readers might owe to Victorian ideals of reading and community. Reading forms a genuine meeting place for historians, literary scholars, theorists, librarians, and historians of the book, and this diverse collection examines nineteenth-century reading in all its personal, historical, literary, and material contexts, while also asking fundamental questions about how we read the Victorians' reading in the present day.

Review
'This timely collection substantially advances our understanding of the practices of Victorian readers by showcasing some of the diverse recent methodologies that have attempted to capture them. The approaches represented range from analysis of the sometimes difficult material realities of reading in the nineteenth century, through considerations of its political and ideological effects, to explorations of its deepest meanings at the level of the individual writer, editor, bookseller and reader. The diversity of methods brought together here is not only likely to encourage productive debate among scholars of this burgeoning field, but also to demonstrate the importance of reception studies to literary scholarship more broadly.' Mary Hammond, University of Southampton, UK 'These reader friendly essays convey the excitement of discovering how 150 years ago reading transformed people's lives. We learn how our forebears illuminated a reading space, created through diaries a life that counts, copiously registered their opinions in marginalia, and taught women that reading can be a dynamic, collaborative activity. We also learn that privileging reading might suppress other needful skills such as observation and imagination. These path-breaking studies significantly enrich the history we've inherited both of books and of readers.' Robert L. Patten, School of Advanced Study, University of London

Impossible Things, by Connie Willis

Winner of six Nebula and two Hugo awards for her fiction, Connie Willis is acclaimed for her gifted imagination and bold invention. Here are eleven of her finest stories, surprising tales in which the impossible becomes real, the real becomes impossible, and strangeness lurks at every turn.

The end of the world comes not with a bang but a series of whimpers over many years in "The Last of the Winnebagos."

The terror of pain and dying gives birth to a startling truth about the nature of the stars, a principle known as the "Schwarzschild Radius."

In "Spice Pogrom," an outrageous colony in outer space becomes the setting for a screwball comedy of bizarre complications, mistaken identities, far-too-friendly aliens--and even true love.

From Publishers Weekly
Willis ( Lincoln's Dreams ) demonstrates her sly wit and quirky perspective in this solid collection of 11 previously published science fiction pieces. Romance becomes entangled with interplanetary negotiations when a Navy linguist and the neglected fiancee of an officious NASA diplomat try to keep a visiting alien happy--even though language problems obscure whether the powers-that-be are arranging a space program or a spice pogrom. In a story that will look like SF only to readers who have steered clear of higher education lately, a consultant promoting "relevantness" and modern pedagogical theory nips at the heels of professors teaching paleontology at a state university. During the Battle of Britain, a Civil Defense worker gains a disturbing insight into himself and the war from a mysterious volunteer who has an uncanny ability to locate bombing victims buried under rubble. Willis's fondness for Shakespeare translates into two stories: one considers how much text would be left intact if all right-wing, left-wing and special-interest groups could delete the bits of which they do not approve; the other tackles the old conundrum, If Shakespeare wasn't Shakespeare, who was?

From School Library Journal
YA?This must-have collection includes several of Willis's prize-winning (Hugo and Nebula) stories. Any library buffeted by the winds of censorship needs to include "Ado," a hilarious send-up in which the attempt to please everyone is carried to its logical extreme. "Spice Pogrom" makes it clear exactly how difficult real communication is, and "Schwarzchild Radius" is a fascinating whole-language addition to the physics curriculum. "Even the Queen," however, is the indispensable selection. The author's introductions to each piece are a lovely bonus.

Masterful short stories
By Glen Engel Cox
A collection of stories by Connie Willis, one of the modern masters of the science fiction short.
"The Last of the Winnebagos" -- I remember reading this story years ago and not caring for it that much. Rereadiug it ten years later, I find it much more appealing. In one sense it is a mystery story; in another it is a cautionary tale. The way that Willis weaves together the two-- the tale of the dead dog and the new, authoritarian society--is fresh and clever. Sentimental? Yes. But in the best way.
"Even the Queen" -- One of my favorite stories, not just because it flirts with taboo, but because it is written with such an easy and joyous manner. Willis' comic stories are like those by Wodehouse--she is never content with a single gag, but can mix in wordplay, pop references, slapstick, and play off the old cliches in new and unpredictable ways.
"Schwarzchild Radius" -- Just so as you don't get the impression that I worship the paper that Willis types upon, I will gladly admit that I don't care for this particular story. I believe that this was one of the first stories in which she portrays a physics concept in characters and setting. Later on, in "Blued Moon" and "At the Rialto," the same method, when used with comedy, works to much better effect.
"Ado" -- One of the comedies that has not aged well, due partly to the backlash against "Political Correctness" of which this story was only a small part. There are parts that are still funny, like the running battle between the teacher and the sun worshipping student fought with Bible versus, but the end less litany of offended organizations goes stale about halfway through.
"Spice Pogrom" -- This is the kind of comedy that will never die; well, at least I hope it won't, because, like Willis, I am enamoured of the screwball as nothing else. Yes, it may seem as formulaic as any pulp adventure, but it has at its core some thing that no mere adventure story has, and that is a true sense of romance. We may want to be the Lone Ranger, but we know in our hearts that we can not ride Silver. On the other hand, with a little wit and luck, we are able to be romantic and silly--it is closer to us.
"Winter's Tale" -- One of the reasons Will is appeals to me so is that I share so many of her interests--screwballs, Wodehouse, and Shakespeare. Here the scholar in Willis truly shows, similar to her wonderful novel Doomsday Book. A great story and a history lesson--what more can you ask for?
"Chance" -- This is as close to a mainstream tale as you will ever see in a genre publication (it first appeared in Asimov's) but it is the kind of story that is popping up with more regularity in small-press literary and mainstream magazines.
"In the Late Cretacious" -- This is another one that did not age too well. Basically, it tries to put a comparison between academic competition and the evolution of dinosaurs, along with a running joke on parking. Bits are funny, but the whole is tired.
"Time Out" -- Another one in a similar vein, although in the end it feels more like "Space Pogrom" then "Ado." The comedy is present, but more organic--not relying so much on repetition, as it does character. And, while it is a story about time travel, it is also, and more importantly, a story about time.
"Jack" -- Another war story, but one that I was able to relate to. Loosely related to Dracula, this has some interesting points about war and its effect on people. Much more subtle than normal Willis fare.
"At the Rialto" -- I like this story. Of course I do--I'm a sucker for quantum physics--but even I have problems following the pattern and ideas here. In this case, Willis worked hard on her research. At least you can read it without understanding everything.
A very good collection on the whole, and definitely worth your time.

Kleenex required
By A Customer
God, "The last of the Winnebagos" has to be the saddest story ever written. I hardly ever cry when I read books; during this one, I *wept*. I had to go shut myself in another room because it was embarassing in front of my family. If you undertake to read this, make sure you have ample privacy, a box of Kleenex, and your dog right beside you.
As to the other stories--Even the Queen is hilarious, and Ado is frighteningly possible. There's plenty here. I'm not going to discuss the rest of it 'cause I'm off to buy Connie Willis' other books!

*Impossible Things* showcases Willis's unique voice
By Scrivenera
In the introduction to her Hugo-award winning story "Even the Queen," Connie Willis condemns "literary demagoguery," arguing "[Shakespeare] wrote about Human Issues--fear and ambition and guilt and regret and love--the issues that trouble and delight all of us, women included. And the only ones I want to write about." In this second collection of her short fiction, she succeeds admirably in her objective.

Willis is gifted with one of the most original voices in science fiction, one that captures the elusive rhythms of screwball comedy (as in "Even the Queen" and "Spice Pogrom"), then just as deftly evokes melancholy or tragedy ("A Winter's Tale," "Chance"). And who but Willis would even attempt to write a story dealing simultaneously with evolution, academia, and parking tickets ("In the Late Cretaceous")? My favorite story in this compilation might be "Time Out," in which a down-to-earth housewife finds herself unexpectedly snared in a secret time-travel experiment, with hilarious results. Willis's light touch is one of her best assets in a genre that can often be overwhelmingly bleak and nihilistic. The humor can sometimes be a little too glib (as in "Ado," which deals with political correctness run amok in a high school English class), but, on the whole, the tone of *Impossible Things* is well-balanced between the comic and the tragic. Best of all, Willis has remembered one of the most important lessons in science fiction--that the distance between "possible" and "impossible" can be measured by a single phrase: What If?

The force is strong with this one
By Squirrelman
This is an amazing art book that would please any star wars fan. Its loaded with content and the pictures look beautiful and cover lots of different things from the new movie. Throughout the book there are brief comments talking about the art teams journey designing everything as well as comments on some of the pictures. Also the book is laid out in a timeline format so that as you go through the book you get to see how the art team was progressing and when they made everything (For example on page 20 in the top left corner it says January 2013 and then on page 54 its dated April 2013). Also each picture has a title and the artists name next to it. The book itself is very nicely made. The slipcover has some great art on both the front and back and the book itself has a nice and thick hardcover featuring the Millennium Falcon. The contents are:

Foreword- is 4 pages and basically just talks about the book and the new movie and what they hoped to achieve with it.

Introduction- is 2 pages and just talks about how they had to make the new film just as good if not better than the previous films and a few things they wanted to do with the new film.

Whos Who- This is 2 pages and lists the names of all the artists and designers.

"Guided Imagery" Concept Phase- This is 70 pages and is just the art and designers throwing out sketches and art that they might later use. You get to see some ideas of how Rey, Finn and other new characters might look as well as a weird version of the AT-AT. There are revisions of Han Solo and Princess Leia, lots of battle scenes and beautiful scenery. There are vehicle concepts, some new storm trooper ideas, lots of different characters, the new Death Star, Junk Yards of ships and stuff, Sith lords, New space ships, and just lots more. The art is quite detailed and looks awesome.

Pre Production- Is 102 pages and is where they finally got certain things approved by J. J. Abrams like hangers, and troop transports. There's even a picture showing exactly how they get out of tie Fighters (I will post a picture of this for you). Like the rest of the book the art is stunning and captures the Star Wars Universe perfectly. You get to see sketches, blueprints, models, lots of concept art and artwork. There's lots of locations, fallen walkers, burning tie fighters, loads of characters and vehicles, and so much more.

Production- Is 52 pages and is art that shows various scenes from the movie. Also the commentary here talks about the production and things such as Harrison Ford getting hurt and other things about making the film. One of my favorite pictures is the X-wings flying right above the water and waters flying everywhere (I'll post a picture).

Post Production- Is 6 pages and I guess is art that they might use for the next movie which according to this book is called Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One which is set for release in December of 2016 (I'll post a picture proving this).

"Who is Luke Skywalker?" Is only a page and talks about the force.

Overall this book was loaded with content and really is an excellent companion to the new film. The art was very nice and covered a lot from the Star Wars universe. Its just really cool to see various versions of things and how they look compared to the final result as well as see the progress the art team made. This was definitely worth every penny and if you or someone you know is a Star Wars fan then get this you wont be disappointed.

Great but a bit different from other Star Wars artbooks
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:7fcb7680babe33ef50d8958493d660ee]]Wow. This artbook is better than I expected, but it's also a bit different than the ones for Episodes I, II and III.

The content is interestingly arranged in chronologically in order of the film production, so you can follow along as the art and concepts are developed from January 2013 to January 2015. You'll be able to see the early concepts for Rey and Finn who in the beginning are drawn like they are for some teen movie, and then much later on when it makes more sense to cover up Rey in survival gear-like clothing.

So there's no specific section on character designs, environments or vehicles. Everything is just mixed together as and when they were being developed. It's an interesting approach that I'm not sure if it's good or bad.

The artworks are fantastic. Most of them are of scene paintings and environments. And these would be the highlight of the book. They are very detailed and beautiful. I think they capture the mood of the film well and the worlds created look really believable and beautiful. One good thing is the artworks feel like they are from Star Wars and not some first-person-shooter sci-fi video game. There's also insightful commentary from the art department.

I'm surprised there aren't more character and creature designs though. For example, you won't get to see the different variations of suits for Poe, Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren or other characters for that matter. Most characters and aliens when they do appear are in the scene paintings. Maybe more will be included in the making-of book.

If you want to learn more about the characters, then get Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary. Or for vehicles, get Star Wars: The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections. This artbook together with the two other books will make for a complete visual collection.

And because the book's arranged in chronological order by film production and not the storyline, it can be difficult to locate the information that you want. For example, Rey's art is scattered throughout. Overall, it's not a big deal, at least to me.

As a 256-page hardcover artbook, it's really worth the money. Highly recommended for the fans.

The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens
By JMM
[[VIDEOID:3c263b00b5485e374a58a9d55c1b7dcc]]“The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a fantastic journey through the galaxy far, far away, along with its characters, creatures, vehicles, weapons, and planets. There are quite a few books about Star Wars: The Force Awakens being released - and this is the best of them if you are interested in the artistic side of Star Wars (or movies in general).

I won’t spoil anything specific - I’ll just say that you’ll probably want to save this book until after you’ve seen the film, because the book includes designs (both conceptual and finished) for certain characters and locations that are better kept a mystery until you’ve experienced the movie.

If you enjoyed the film, you will be pleased to know that this book offers the reader insight into the detailed art direction and production design that went into creating “The Force Awakens”. Star Wars has always used the image to convey thematic ideas; and the level of imagination and creativity that goes into them is arguably greater than any other film franchise.

Among the imagery in the book are early and unused concept sketches, storyboards, paintings, and even blueprints. The images are printed in high resolution so you can inspect every detail. Although this is primarily a book of art, the author has done a nice job writing text that compliments the imagery and enhances the experience of the book. Included are quotes from key creatives that worked on the project.

On the whole, the book has a nice layout; while most books group the artwork by character or the film chronology, this book does things a bit differently. The art is instead published essentially in the order it was created, beginning with the earliest concept ideas in late 2012 and ending with some post-production design changes in January 2015. So as the reader flips through the book they can see the evolution of the film's designs take place.

This has instantly become one of my favorite movie art books. If you liked the movie and want to know more about the designs from concept to completion, you will enjoy the book. This would make a great gift for the Star Wars fan.

more than an interesting travel guide
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book before my travel in Andalusia. I found it to be very informative about many regions/ cities of Spain the author travelled when visited Spain from Barcelona, Zaragozza, Valladolid, Burgos, Madrid, Toledo, and the lovely Andalusia. He described bery accurately , but with passion also the not only the cities itself, but the local people habits and attitude which is very nice.

Tourism was not developed in the time this book was written, therefore a foreigner was treated more friendly and welcomed.
I would recommend before a trip to SPain

Reprint of a book I grew up with
By Orson Scott Card
When I was too young to handle the language of the Book of Mormon itself (let alone wading through all the Isaiah material in Second Nephi!), it was Emma Marr Petersen's retelling of the stories that first led me to love the book. Her language is clear and it never felt to me as if she were talking down to me. I practically memorized her accounts, and they remained faithful enough to the original that there was no sense of disillusionment or eye-opening when I was old enough to read the originals. Though the book was illustrated a little, her text assumed that the stories should be entertaining and informative from the words alone, making this far more complete than any of the "illustrated" books or series. I believe this may still be the best introduction to the Book of Mormon for young Latter-day Saints - whether they're reading on their own or being read to by adults or older siblings.

Thorough Pattern Instructions, but Needs More Concision
By A. Sotomayor
This book has a lot of good ideas for putting together personal items and things for the home - it's great for handmade gift-giving! I have made a few of the projects, including the bedside organizer and the quilted tote and they came together beautifully. However, the instructions often held me back by their extreme detail. Over-explaining every step can be frustrating for both beginner and advanced sewist alike. I started using this book right after I first began to sew and found the verbose instructions to be really intimidating, even on basic projects. Every stitch is explained to the point that there can be no confusion. This is good....but now as a fairly advanced seamstress, I still find them to be intimidating and hampering. I constantly have to read and reread each paragraph, feeling that I am missing something. For the last project I did, I just abandoned the instructions altogether and finished the project on my own knowledge of sewing.

Also, as a quilter, the patchwork blanket piecing seems a bit overly complicated in that the quilt isn't pieced in the traditional manner, and uses way more fabric than necessary. I don't think the blanket would wear evenly over time.

In all, very well constructed patterns but they scream for concision.

DO NOT BUY KINDLE EDITION!!!!
By KittyKat
I wanted to make the lounge pants in here and was looking forward to easy sewing. To my surprise there was no pattern in this book. There are apparently patterns that come with the physical book, but were not included in the Kindle edition, not even measurements that you could draw yourself. I quickly scanned through the book to see if there were any other patterns for projects and there weren't. What is the point of this book if you don't have patterns to use or directions to follow to make your own. Save yourself the hassle and don't get the Kindle version!

Not what I expected, but worth having
By Elysia S. Sesi
I am still a beginner when it comes to sewing. Sure, I've made a few throw pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, lounge pants, and a few other very simple projects. But this book seems to be for a much more advanced group of people. The projects are very, very cute but there are so many steps that each one seems daunting. I might attempt a simpler version, but I'd rather the book were simpler. I feel that putting the word "simple" on the cover is a bit misleading. The photography is beautiful, and there are several projects that I'm still going to attempt. The Kitty Tunnel is intriguing, and I appreciate the fact that it's so detailed. The lounge pants from Sewing Green are much simpler than these, and require elastic- which I feel is more comfortable. I like the bedside organizer- useful and simple. There's a canvas hanging toiletry bag, which should actually be made from waterproof material to be useful. The kimono-style bathrobe is very cute, but I'd make it much longer. Who needs a bathrobe that barely covers your rear? The checkbook clutch organizer is also very tempting, but another project that doesn't really qualify as "simple". It definitely doesn't look home-made. This book is for those ready to graduate to more time-consuming projects. It contains very detailed instructions and illustrations, but the print is quite small. Overall, I'm glad I have it, even though it's somewhat advanced.
