Using self-administered questionnaire survey design, 218 mainland students in the university were surveyed. The results suggest that (1) social support was significantly correlated to cross-cultural adaptation; (2) the effects of family support to cross-cultural adaptation was stronger than the friend support and university support; (3) social support, in general, was not related to any acculturation strategies. However, friend support was negatively related to the strategy of separation and positively related to the strategy of integration; (4) cross-cultural adaptation was negatively related to the strategy of marginalization and separation, but positively related to the strategy of integration; and (5) except the source of tuition, none of the characteristics of the mainland students lead different levels of cross-cultural adaptation.

An innocent, young Catholic woman from a Canadian mining town who had "never been anywhere," Zeppa signed up for a two-year stint teaching in a remote corner of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Despite the initial shock of material privation and such minor inconveniences as giardia, boils, and leeches, Zeppa felt herself growing into the vast spaces of simplicity that opened up beyond the clutter of modern life. Alongside her burgeoning enchantment, a parallel realization that all was not right in Shangri-La arose, especially after her transfer to a college campus charged with the politics of ethnic division. Zeppa's story is nearly an inversion of the ancient Buddhist tale of Siddhartha (in which a prince ventures from the paradise of his father's palace only to find the suffering and decay that he never knew existed) in that the author, at the age of 22, abruptly leaves a stale life in Canada to become a volunteer teacher in the remote and largely undisturbed Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan. Cloaked in the airy mountains between India and China, Bhutan initially frustrates but eventually captivates Zeppa with its rudimentary lifestyle that forces her to question former values and plans for the future. Though the story line would seem to open itself to cloying romanticization, Zeppa's telling of her clumsy attempts to adapt rings with sincerity and inspires sympathy. She thinks to herself upon visiting a local house: "In one shadowy corner, there is a skinny chicken. I blink several times but it does not vanish. Is it a pet? Is it dinner?" Zeppa's lucid descriptions of the craggy terrain and honest respect for the daily struggles of the natives bring the tiny land to life in a way that is reverent but real. Though she tries to avoid what a friend terms "that Shangri-La-Di-Da business" and grapples with the poverty, sexism and political squabbles in Bhutan that bother her, there is little doubt that she sees the place in a largely positive light and is tempted to remain. In the end, Zeppa's is a lively tale of her earnest efforts to reconcile what she has learned with what she has known. (June)

Canadian Zeppa turned away from a secure future "to do something in the real world." When the opportunity came to teach in the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, Zeppa accepted with alacrity over the protests of her xenophobic grandfather and the lukewarm approval of her fianc?. At 22, Zeppa was unprepared for the rigors of life in the Third World. Upon arrival at her assigned junior high school in the tiny tropical village of Pema Gatshel, she was dismayed by the primitive living quarters and her own inadequacies as a teacher. But her overwhelming culture shock was eased by the charm of the Bhutanese and the beauty of the landscape. Leaving her first assignment with reluctance, Zeppa was transferred to a position at a college in the mountain town of Kanglung, became a Buddhist, and plunged into a relationship with one of her students. A delightful story of a love affair with Bhutan

This book has received plenty of praise from other reviewers and now I can add mine. It was a pleasure from start to finish and one of those books that, while hard to put down, you don't want to end either. Through her wonderful descriptions, honesty and humor, you are transported with the author on her both brave and naive venture into a vastly different culture and terrain than anything she has ever known. She starts out with great trepidation, wondering whether she has made a huge mistake and having no idea if she will have the strength of constitution or character to survive without her accustomed level of personal comforts and safety. It is an experience that allows her personal growth and an unexpected opportunity for reevaluating her values and reforming her path for the future. I bought this book initially to learn something of the culture of Bhutan prior to a trip we are planning, but got SO much more from it - certainly one of the best I have read in a while.

Detailed, Interesting and Deep

Jamie goes to great lengths to provide a great story with enough detail that you can see the sights and smell the aromas in your mind. What I do admire about her writing is that she is honest enough to not paint a picture of complete perfection in this tiny Asian country: She shows both the good and bad and is very open with her feelings. At times, however, I feel she opens a bit too much. Some sections about her personal issues go a bit long for me. But that is just a matter of my taste. Others may find this more to their liking. Also, I feed she is a bit too critical of Christianity. While I understand this is not a theological book, the author does dig into religion quite a bit,,,enough to allow review criticism on the topic. I am just wishing she would differentiate between Christianity as she knows it...and real true Christian teaching. Aside from this, I highly recommend her writings and wish the book had not ended so soon.

Great travel writing

Enjoyed this book immensely, but was disappointed that the author spent so much of the book building up her relationship with the Bhutanese student, only to leave us hanging as to what happened after she had his son and married him. The descriptions of Bhutan were magnificent, but I am afraid our author could have done a better job respecting and understanding the Bhutanese culture. She insisted, as a teacher, on prodding her students to discuss topics that would have got them into trouble politically, which to me showed a lack of respect, and she rushed headlong into a relationship with a Bhutanese man without completely considering the consequences. Overall, a great read, and my criticisms would not have arisen had I not become completely engaged with the story.

Oh Heath, how could you? Wow, another exciting saga of our Monster Squad heroes as they fight demons, wendigos, Lilith, and their own government. There are hard decisions to make, more surprises for Mark, and heartache for some. A super conclusion to this storyline with lots of hints for the future of the Monster Squad. Loved it!

Fantastic! I was unable to out it down. I was amazed at the twists and turns! Questions were answered but at a cost. Hints for future adventures were intertwined with resolutions. This is a great series and this book is my favorite! Yes there was sadness but non-stop action told by a true storyteller.

I loved the majority of it, but was heartbroken over the demise of certain characters...but not everyone can survive every book, right? Sacrifices must be made... I still really enjoyed reading it and of course it was action packed, with shocking twists, and really awesome over all!!

Pattern recognition is at the heart of applications ranging from the identification of white blood cells to the selection of tax returns for auditing, from earthquake prediction to speech recognition. Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis is an ideal introduction to pattern recognition for both higher-level undergraduate and beginning graduate courses.
The book relies extensively on worked examples and realistic applications that have been thoroughly classroom-tested. Since images are often the input to pattern recognition systems, a survey of image processing theory is included, covering techniques such as scene segmentation, Hough transforms, least squares, Eigenvector line fitting, and Fourier transforms. These important aspects of pattern recognition are also presented:

*Statistical decision making, including Bayes' Theorem

*Nonparametric decision making, including histograms

*Hierarchical and partitional clustering: the advantages and risks

*Artificial neural networks—and how they work in real applications, such as classifying sex from facial images

i am a junior lecturer (started in dec, 2005). one of the main aspects that attract me regarding a book, besides its content, is its supplementary material (lecture slides, quizzes&solutions, manuals and so on).

so, apart from the fact that i cant find any supplementary material, the book's content is SUPERB.

above superb there's only one rating and that's THE BEST (according to me). difference between a high 5 star and a low one.

this book would have achieved that, given that some supplementary material is provided on the web (only 2 other books in my whole life have i been able to rate as THE BEST).

all in all, SUPERB for beginners and junior/senior undergraduate students.

About the Author
Elise Frattura is an assistant professor in the Department of Exceptional Education and Educational Administration and associate dean for the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She teaches courses in administration of student services, organizational leadership, and special education law. Frattura researches and publishes in the area of nondiscrimination law, integrated comprehensive services for all learners, and the theoretical underpinnings of educational segregation. Coauthor of Meeting the Needs of All Learners: How Leaders Go Beyond Inclusion (Corwin Press 2000), Frattura works with school districts across the country to assist in the movement from programs to services for all learners.

Colleen A. Capper is professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has authored or coauthored five books (published or in-press) and refereed journal articles related to educational leadership and equity. Capper has served as a special education teacher, administrator of special programs, and founding director of a nonprofit agency for preschool children and adults with disabilities in the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Capper works with individuals in school districts, nonprofit, and for-profit agencies across the country on ways to integrate social justice, equity, and spirituality into their daily work.

Crucially, she demonstrates how such aspiration and identity-building are strongly gendered, requiring different dispositions required of men and women in the pursuit of collective social uplift. The Dhanka strategy for occupying the role of adivasi in urban India comes at a cost: young women must relinquish dreams of education and employment in favor of community-sanctioned marriage and domestic life. Ultimately, We Were Adivasis explores how such groups negotiate their pasts to articulate different visions of a yet uncertain future in the increasingly liberalized world.
