Expensive worksheets
By Mike B.
This is one of the worst "teacher resources" I have encountered. This amounts to nothing more than an expensive collection of worksheets. I understand this is supposed to be college level material but this whole book feels more like a study guide than it does a textbook. This teacher's resource cd solidified the fact this book is poorly made. The worksheets are nothing more than a few problems thrown together as a supplement to the material we are supposed to teach for each section. The amount of material you receive for the cost is simply too disproportionate. I sincerely expected so much more for the cost.

This item received a 3 star rating because the disc adds a little more functionality to the book, which is a whole different issue. I do like that it includes labs for each section in a clear and concise manner. The CD is easy to use, and the materials and resources are separated by chapter and then by section. Works okay for what it is intended, but I simply cannot justify the price. If the price drops, it is worth a purchase, but do not pay full price, there just isn't enough here for what they are charging.

And the Wolves Howled , Fragments of Two Lifetimes, by Barbro Karlen

For as long as she can remember, Barbro Karlén has recalled a previous existence as Anne Frank, author of the famous diary. Now, prompted by a series of events that culminated in a struggle for survival, she tells her amazing story.

She takes us from her early fame as a best-selling child literary sensation in her native Sweden to her years as a policewoman and successful horse trainer. But this is no ordinary life history. As the victim of discrimination, personal vendettas, media assassination, libel, and attempted murder, Karlén is eventually shown the karmic background to these events.

Glimpsing fragments of her former life, she begins to understand how forces of destiny reach out from the past into the present, and she is finally free to be herself. This the story of a supernatural struggle for truth in the face of discrimination and lies.

Review
An extraordinary book ... deserves to be taken seriously -- International Herald Tribune

From the Back Cover
'A very thought provoking read! Whether or not she was really Anne Frank in another life, I do not doubt Karlen's sincerity.' Rabbi Yonassan Gershom, author of Beyond the Ashes and From Ashes to Healing.

For as long as she can remember, Barbro Karlen has harboured terrible memories of a previous existence on earth as the Jewish girl Anne Frank, author of the famous Diary. Until recently, she had kept this knowledge private. Now, prompted by a series of events which culminated in a struggle for her survival, she is ready to tell her amazing story.

And the Wolves Howled is the autobiography of Barbro Karlen, from her early fame as a bestselling child literary sensation in her native Sweden, to her years as a policewoman and a successful dressage rider. But this is no ordinary life history. As the victim of discrimination, personal vendettas, media assassination, libel and attempted murder, Karlen is forced to fight for her very being. In the dramatic conclusion to her living nightmare, she is shown the karmic background to these events. She glimpses fragments of her former life, and begins to understand how forces of destiny reach over from the past into the present. With this knowledge she is finally free to be herself...

And the Wolves Howled is the story of one woman's superhuman struggle for truth in the face of discrimination and lies.

If this is not authentic I don't know what is.
By Dr. Sabine Lucas
As a past life therapist, specialized in past life dreams, I find Barbro Karlen's story absolutely convincing. Although her heartbreaking contemporary tale of persecution in a supposedly peaceful country becomes repetitive and almost nauseous after a while it is nevertheless in keeping with what I know about the carry-over of repetition compulsion from one lifetime to another. The return of nightmarish past life memories, triggered by similar tribulations in the present, is equally accurate and authentic. In her heroic struggle with and final victory over the forces of the past the author sets an example for how to deal with and resolve negative karma. Although this book is no work of art, it is an invaluable resource for all of us who struggle and work with past life trauma. And yes, based on the evidence found in this book, I am convinced that Barbro Karlen was in her last life Anne Frank.

Huh?
By A Customer
Never have I been as perplexed about a book as with this selection.Aside from the back that the writing style/ language is droning, montone and without texture of any kind, I don't know what the book was aiming to explain. The story is Boring-
I had to search high and low for details about the re-incarnation aspects. This subject, which claims to be the main one of this book actually takes a back seat to the authors mundane tales of dressage, and I supposes tales of persecution.
I am usually delighted by a nice photo section, but here again I was mystified by the selection: a photo of the author at age 2, age 2 1/2, age 7, age 12, another age 12, different headshot pose, one of the author in 1981 next to a horse, another in 1989 with two horses and "a colleague"- no identification , another photo of the author on a horse, late 1980's, another horse photo with the author, 1989, another of the author (surprise!) with a horse, 1991, and then a headshot of the author 1997, and then a different pose 1998.No other photos of persons, objects, buildings, streets, family members documents- basically nothing besides that author in her dresssage get-up ,or a studio portrait of her face. This is so eerie.
I have read hundreds and hundreds of biographies, memoirs, including dozens of narratives of people's experiences with past life regressions and the like. This one is a doozie, this lady is just plain flaky and a poor storyteller as well.Sorry- add me to the extensive list of people who the author claims to be persecuted by.

Not what I expected, yet fascinating
By Beckett Shiona
Thought-provoking. Not quite what I expected, and yet I could not put it down. One review which I read of this book complained that only the first several pages were truly about the author's past-life memories (although I found them embedded throughout) and that most of the book was concerned with Ms. Karlen's years working in the mounted police and training horses for dressage. But I suspect they missed the parallels she attempted to draw between the persecution she experienced in her current existence with that of her past life, and the re-entry into this existence of the souls who had sought to destroy her in their shared last lives. Her eventual and hard-won triumph over those who sought to destroy her was due, as she makes clear, to being able to draw on the knowledge of that past life, as well as to survive her own emotional anguish and, to believe (as Anne Frank did) in Good, and to forgive.

The writing seemed terribly simplistic though, and I noted several grammatical errors. From my own experience of reading different translations of my much-beloved novel "Desiree", by Anne Marie Selinko, I suspect that the problems I found with the writing style of this book were simply those of poor translation. (I read Desiree in the original translation 40 years ago and fell in love with the book. Reading it again years later in a new translation, I was very disappointed to find that much of the charm of the novel had evaporated. A good translation makes an enormous difference, whether in fiction or non-fiction.)

As to naysayers who argue that Ms. Karlen's memories of Anne's death do not jibe with the accounts of survivors at Bergen-Belsen, I would point out that Anne was said to have died of the typhus that raged through the camp. Ms. Karlen remembers being scooped up and thrown into the crematory fires. Well, it would not be the first time that a plague victim was tossed out with the other bodies before the individual had truly died. It was so common an occurrence that it became part of a Monty Python sketch, while being buried alive, a fear throughout the centuries, found its way into Poe's stories. Those in the death camps hardly had access to any method to be sure that someone apparently gone was truly dead -- not even a mirror to see if there was still breath.. For Anne, apparently dead of typhus, to have been thrown into the crematory before she had fully expired would not have been impossible.

Whatever the truth of her memories of reincarnation, the point remains that Ms. Karlen has, throughout her lifetime, experienced these memories as fact; for her, they are as real as the air she breathes. Whether or not one accepts this, this third-person presentation of her autobiography, with its potent descriptions of all the persecution women of her generation experienced in attempting to break into a man's world, is compelling and fascinating.

The UN International Criminal Tribunals: Transition without Justice? (Routledge Research on the United Nations (UN)), by Klaus Bachmann, A

Both the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) are now about to close.

Bachmann and Fatic look back at the achievements and shortcomings of both tribunals from an interdisciplinary perspective informed by sociology, political science, history, and philosophy of law and based upon on two key notions: the concepts of legitimacy and efficiency. The first asks to what extent the input (creation) of, the ICTY and the ICTR can be regarded as legitimate in light of the legal and public debate in the early 1990s. The second confronts the output (the procedures and decisions) of the ICTY and the ICTR with the tasks both tribunals were assigned by the UN Security Council, the General Assembly, and by key organs (the president and the chief prosecutors). The authors investigate to what extent the ICTY and the ICTR have delivered the expected results, whether they have been able to contribute to 'the maintenance of peace', 'stabilization' of the conflict regions, or even managed to provide 'reconciliation' to Rwanda. Furthermore, the book is concerned with how many criminals, over whom the ICTY and the ICTR wield jurisdiction, have actually been prosecuted and at what cost.

Offering the first balanced and in depth analysis of the International Criminal Tribunals, the volume provides an important insight into what lessons have been learned, and how a deeper understanding of the successes and failures can benefit the international legal community in the future.

Writing crisply and making periodic comparisons with the antecedent criminal courts of the 1940s in Germany and Japan, they cover much ground. The outcome is a new and revisionist view of these two courts, giving them credit for some positive developments --D. P. Forsythe, emeritus, University of Nebraska, CHOICE

The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment, by Franklin E. Zimring

Why does the United States continue to employ the death penalty when fifty other developed democracies have abolished it? Why does capital punishment become more problematic each year? How can the death penalty conflict be resolved?
In The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment, Frank Zimring reveals that the seemingly insoluble turmoil surrounding the death penalty reflects a deep and long-standing division in American values, a division that he predicts will soon bring about the end of capital punishment in our country. On the one hand, execution would seem to violate our nation's highest legal principles of fairness and due process. It sets us increasingly apart from our allies and indeed is regarded by European nations as a barbaric and particularly egregious form of American exceptionalism. On the other hand, the death penalty represents a deeply held American belief in violent social justice that sees the hangman as an agent of local control and safeguard of community values. Zimring uncovers the most troubling symptom of this attraction to vigilante justice in the lynch mob. He shows that the great majority of executions in recent decades have occurred in precisely those Southern states where lynchings were most common a hundred years ago. It is this legacy, Zimring suggests, that constitutes both the distinctive appeal of the death penalty in the United States and one of the most compelling reasons for abolishing it.
Impeccably researched and engagingly written, Contradictions in American Capital Punishment casts a clear new light on America's long and troubled embrace of the death penalty.

Praise for The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment
By A Customer
"Zimring does us a great public service in examining the United States' retention of a primitive and brutal punishment long after it was abandoned by other developed nations. This book will help insure that the inevitable abandonment of capital punishment by the United States is not delayed for another generation."
Stephen Bright
Director, Southern Center for Human Rights
"Frank Zimring's book will revolutionize how we understand the death penalty in the United States. Why, Zimring asks, does capital punishment persist in America, almost uniquely among established democracies, despite entrenched unfairness and the virtual inevitability of error? His original and provocative answer is America's vigilante tradition. Like vigilante action, the death penalty suffers from the biases of the dominant social group and the unwarranted assumption that the guilty have been correctly identified. Highlighting this uncomfortable comparison offers a promising new approach for those committed to ending this inhumane institution of American life."
Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch
"Frank Zimring's new book makes a major contribution to understanding the present situation of the death penalty in the United States and to predicting what lies ahead. Central to his analysis is his judgment that a "fundamental value conflict" lies at the root of the struggle: Will America's frontier "vigilante values" that support our death penalty practices survive their collision with our attachment to "due process" values? Written in his characteristically lively style, this provocative and completely original work has much to teach both defenders and opponents of capital punishment."
Hugo Adam Bedau, author of The Death Penalty in America

I use this in class (along w/ Banner) and it really hits home. While his arguments are controversial, they are grounded in data.
