About the Author
Nigel Holt is Head of Department of Psychology at Aberystwyth University. He is a Cognitive Psychologist interested in perception, research methods and the history of psychology. Andy Bremner is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmith's, University of London. He is a Developmental Psychologist particularly interested in childhood perception, memory and learning. Ed Sutherland is based at the University of Leeds. He is a Cognitive Psychologist and his current research interests include the role of emotion in reasoning and the psychology of design. Michael Vliek is an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam. He is a Social Psychologist and his main research interests include social comparison and the dynamics of self-evaluation, intra-group processes and the influence of time in motivational processes. Michael Passer coordinates the introductory psychology programme at the University of Washington. Ronald E. Smith is Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Psychology Training at the University of Washington, where he also has served as Area Head of the Social Psychology and Personality area.

About the Author
Serena Nanda is professor emeritus of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her most recent book is THE GIFT OF THE BRIDE: A TALE OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MATRIMONY, AND MURDER, a novel set in an Indian immigrant community in New York City. Her other published works include NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN: THE HIJRAS OF INDIA, winner of the 1990 Ruth Benedict Prize; AMERICAN CULTURAL PLURALISM AND LAW; GENDER DIVERSITY: CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATIONS; and a New York City guidebook, NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER: 40 PERFECT DAYS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. She has always been captivated by the stories people tell and by the tapestry of human diversity. Anthropology was the perfect way for her to immerse herself in these passions, and through teaching, to spread the word about the importance of understanding both human differences and human similarities.

Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Texas State University-San Marcos. His published works include ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY: AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY and SACRED REALMS: ESSAYS IN RELIGION, BELIEF, AND SOCIETY, as well as journal articles on commerce, religion, and ethnic identity in West Africa; African exploration and romanticism; and African veterans of French colonial armed forces. Warms's interests in anthropology were kindled by college courses and by his experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. He has traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He continues to teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology every year but also teaches classes in anthropological theory, the anthropology of religion, economic anthropology, and film at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His current projects include an encyclopedia of theory in social and cultural anthropology and a book about the development of anthropology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. About the Author
The late F. Alton Everest (1909-2005) was the most respected audiologist in the professional recording industry. His revered works and courses produced more than twenty books and editions in his lifetime, including The Master Handbook of Acoustics, Audio Techniques for the Home and Studio, and How to Build a Small Budget Recording Studio from Scratch ... With 12 Tested Designs. As the supervisor of UC San Diego¿s Listening Section Laboratory during WWII, Everest conducted underwater sound research experiments for the war effort. For 25 years he produced science fi lms for the renowned Moody Institute of Science, followed by years teaching and working as a highly sought after audio consultant.

First Impressions

As a person who tends to be a visual learner rather than an aural learner this course is a very good exercise for getting me to focus and train my ear and mind in new ways. These listening skills are not "automatic" for me so the fact that this book starts at ground level is fine even if I already understand it on paper (and by the lights on my eq- lol).

As far as the Critical Listening cd goes I have had no trouble getting it to play, but...

why is the first half the book the back half the cd and the second half of the book start at track 1?

to confuse me more, when I get to the middle of the cd (where the lessons at the front of the book begin) it starts with lesson two??? Wondering where chapter one disappeared to I skipped through the tracks only to find it as the last track on the cd, track 18. Silly me I expected the cd to follow the book and for lesson one to correspond to track one. What the heck ever happened to quality control? C'mon guys! So minus one star for the quality issues, not content.

The ideas are laid out logically and the course walks you along one little step at time. The latter could be a plus or a minus depending upon where you are coming from. For me this was better than if it had just rushed me along without being clear and concise, even if at the expense of being a bit tedious.

Others like me might also appreciate the cd that comes with Ira White's "audio made easy" book. It touches on this topic in a practical way with examples involving actual instruments. White's book covers the basics (in breadth, not depth) and is a good resource for those just getting their feet wet in pro audio.

Just what I needed

I am currently a student in mediaproduction and not too apt in the field of audio. Often I would come across examples in my textbooks on problems concerning EQ, audio levels, sounds masking eachother comb filter effect etc. My biggest problem is that I do not know what I should listen for. I haven't finished this book yet, but I still feel confident enough about in order to praise it in a review. This book is very good. Nice examples on the CD and very helpful. I do not know how useful it is for audio professionals, but for a student I think it is awesome.

In my first review I wrote that I thought the CD was sloppily made. In fact there was no trouble with the tracks, but since I did not realize that the CD contained mp3's rather than ordinary CD tracks my player read track 10 as track 2. Well, I dont know if I would trust mp3's as a listening reference (even if they have a very hight quality). I wish they could have used CD quality Wave files on a DVD instead. Still a helpful book, though.

Good Starting Point

I picked up this book along with Master Handbook of Acoustics and found this book a good accompaniment. A lot of the topics discussed in the Master Handbook sort of coincided with this book in a similar order. I found the audio examples to be a fair reference point.. some of the demonstrations were pretty hokey but the point was totally there. The one thing I didn't like about the Master Handbook of Acoustics was the fact that it was a lot of theory without any sort of audio reference to tie the chapters together and this book worked as a good compliment and an overview of what you're listening for.

It's true that if you have a copy of this book without a CD, it's useless since it does have audio identification exercises. If you receive this book without a CD or the CD is broken and you purchased from this site, Amazon does have a return policy so you'll want to replace it with a different copy right away. Also, if you've got a crazy audiophile setup but can't figure out a way to convert an .mp3 to a CD audio friendly format, try out Audacity for this purpose "[...]"

I gave this book 4 stars since it has a dependency on the CD which, according to other reviews, does not work on all systems. This is more of a workbook of exercises than a full on how-to for critical listening.

Jake Carlisle has been working for the last few years deep undercover in order to infiltrate a Russian mob organization. During this activity he tried to save a young Russian boy who witnessed a murder and has other important information that could lead to the imprisonment of the criminals. However, something goes wrong during the FBI operation to extract the young boy and Jake is shot. Needing medical care for himself and Nicholai but on the run from all the law enforcement agencies because he thinks that somebody has misinformed and misled them, Jake can't turn to any hospital or medical facility. The only solution is to kidnap somebody who has medical knowledge. The victim is Samantha Edgars, who is an ER nurse and on her way home. After her initial shock Samantha realizes that her kidnapper isn't a usual criminal and since she has already lost anything that is important in her life, she decides to help Jake.

Jake is an absolutely great male main character who has very pronounced protective feelings towards the weaker ones. Having experienced as a young boy what price his family had to pay for his father's undercover police work, he has decided that he has to stay a loner for the rest of his life. Well, when he decided that he didn't yet know Samantha and the feelings she would wake up in him.

Samantha on the other hand came with a lot of baggage. She lost everything that was dear to her and had actually taken a serious decision concerning her life at the day of her abduction. Her reactions during the kidnapping were very real and I could nearly relate to all of them. OK, there were some moments when I thought that some actions were beyond me but who knows how a person functions who made Samantha's experience in life and has taken the decision she took (sorry, can't really tell you more about this without spoiling!).

The story line was straight forward, without any twist and turns. However, the book was very entertaining and well written. Jake, Sami and Nicky were great main characters who supported the plot very well.

If you're looking for a nice and relaxed read I can but recommend this one to you.

This is the best book that has been published on the Maxim Gun in the last 40 years. It is fantastically detailed, and draws the reader into discussions of not only how the gun was designed, marketed and used, but also the inventor, troubleshooting the gun, calibers, and usage tips. All in all, a fantastic read and a must buy for any Militaria collector or Maxim enthusiast!

Have you ever been tempted by something or someone you know you shouldn't have? Craved something so much, it overtakes every thought? I have.

I've recently moved in with my father and his new family. My father who I once saw as my hero, is now a stranger. It's been seven years since I last saw him, if it wasn't for my mother getting her new promotion, and me finishing senior year, I wouldn't be here.
The worst part is his new wife, my stepmother. She is warm and friendly and I hate that I like her, but it's her son, my stepbrother Aidan who I can't stand. He's a cocky a**hole who has found a new pleasure to get under my skin.
At school people treat him like he's some kind of God, women throw themselves at him, as the guys kiss his ass. Yes he has a delicious body you just want to lick all over, live out every dirty fantasy, but his attitude stinks. He pretends we don't live under the same roof, pretends I'm a complete stranger around others.
I hate him so much, hate how he teases me in front of his friends, throws himself into my personal space, yet my traitorous body reacts to him. I want him to touch me, feel me, taste me. Have him control my body, even though I know it's wrong, it makes me crave him to want me more.

I'm here for six months, surely I can handle six months living with him. Right?

New adult contemporary romance with mature content. Recommended for 17+ due to mature language and adult situations.

Warning ends with a cliffhanger.

My Thoughts on Tempted

This was the story of Kacey, who moves in with her estranged father and his new wife for 6 months when her mother has a job opportunity. Kacey's step mother has a son Kacey's age named Aidan. Aidan and Kacey have an instant attraction to each other and this story tells of how they try to fight it because they are stepsiblings.

Kacey initially came across as a sweet girl and I often felt sorry for her with the way Aidan and other characters in the book treat her. But there were moments that she showed a different side of her that was strong and a fighter. I really liked that side of her.
Aidan however was completely unlikable for me. Even his few moments of supportiveness and compassion for Kacey couldn't erase all his negative qualities. He often bragged about how he'd slept with every girl at school. He's a huge jerk to Kacey all with the excuse of trying to avoid crossing the line and keeping her at arms length. He claims to have feelings for her but he refers to her as a b***h on a regular basis. Even if it's only in his mind, I didn't like how often he referred to her that way just for giving him a taste of his own medicine.

In the end I didn't want them together and I wanted better for Kacey. However the book was able to hold my attention and was fairly entertaining. I am interested to see what will happen next and if Aidan will grow up any in the next book.

High school senior Kasey is headed to spend the last 6 months of school at her fathers house, the father she really hasn't had much communication with since her parents divorce. He's now remarried with a stepson Kasey's age.

Upon meeting both are drawn to each other.
Aiden at times I wanted to punch. As seniors they are old enough to realize that rumors and teasing are just plain childish but he takes Nick's advice seeing this as the only way to keep his distance.
That bugged me a bit, his need to embarrass and possibly traumatize Kasey all because he can't handle himself.

Kasey and Aiden were both likeable characters, she's not as strong as I usually like my heroines but she wasn't a whiner all through the book either so I can't dislike her.
Aiden was the typical jerk with a soft side, getting to the real him just took awhile.

All in all I enjoyed Tempted but would have preferred a little more in the end, I do look forward to Nick's story, hopefully he grows up a bit!

Lacks Maturity.

Kacey is in her senior year of High School with six months before she graduates. Circumstances beyond her control, she is shipped off to her father's house to finish school there. This in itself would be hard, exams in a new school and all, but she hasn't spoken to her dad in 6 years, let alone met his new wife and son. She is literally speechless when she meets Aiden - the step brother. It's an instant attraction for both of them.

The best way to counteract his attraction to his step sister - is to be the annoying step brother and pester her so that she won't look at him with lust in her eyes. This only works for a short time, but in between, Kacey goes through an ordeal that brings out the best of Aidan. He is totally supportive and protective of her.

On the whole, I enjoyed this story line. I am always happy to read a step brother romance. Although, there were parts of this book that had me shaking my head. This story needed more depth and growth to make it a great book. I know it was set in a high school, but the whole thing lacked maturity. For example, if you are going to add a court scene, you need to research about it, to know the terms and procedures, otherwise it feels inaccurate to those that do know.

There is a cliffhanger at the end, and it won't be until Fall 2016 before there will be any resolution.
