About the Author
Peter Haining first came across the Sweeney Todd story in his early career as a Fleet Street journalist. He went on to write the first definitive bibliography of the man. Now a full-time writer, he has recently contributed a new entry - Sweeney Todd - to the Dictionary of National Biography (published by OUP in 2003). He is the author of The Jail That Went to Sea, also published by Robson.

About the Author
MERCER MAYER began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since then, he has published over 300 titles. A Disappointing Companion to Just Me and My Dad

My little brother (now in his 30s) grew up to Mercer Mayer's Just Me and My Dad and Just For You. I bought those last year for our then-one-year-olds and was delighted that they were just as wonderful as I remembered. I ordered Just Me and My Mom recently and I'm so disappointed with the content. Unlike Just Me and My Dad, which has a sweet and happy story line, this book is just about Little Critter doing things he's not supposed to and people getting mad.

And, call me a feminist if you will, but I felt slighted by this book's treatment of the mom. Just Me and My Dad is all about an awesome camping trip little critter goes on with his dad, while Just Me and My Mom is all about this poor kid getting dragged to a bunch of boring museums where he's not allowed to touch things (and one with a bunch of lame pictures), and then a dress store with his mom. In fact, my husband was reading it to the kids the other night and I heard him flipping back through the pages, muttering to himself, "When was this WRITTEN?"

Shockingly, 1990. Feels more like the 1950s. And not that sexy John Hamm sort of way.

Fun read for kids and adults alike!

I loved the Little Critter books when I was growing up, and this is the first book I bought to read to my infant daughter. I get wonderfully nostalgic reading it to her and talking about how my mom used to read these books to me. Colorful pictures make it fun for even babies to look at. There's a lot of fun in them for adults as well, the looks on the mom's face is priceless! I didn't catch her exhaustion and frustration when I was a kid.

Unhappy

I am very displeased with this textbook. The boxes and pictures on every page are so dark I can't read or see them. I am very unhappy about this because I spent close to $200 on the book. Also, for spending close to $200 on the book I wish there were some colorized pictures. The cover scuffs easily as well. Also, there are some typos in the book.

I felt this book was applicable for students as well as family and friends. It had a warm, conversational style that was easy to read and very personable for a sensitive topic. It carried a breadth of coverage, so I can see why it would be valuable for students of psychology, social studies, nursing, and more. Highly recommend this book to those wanting light shed on a topic too often kept in the dark in America.

I read Tesla Coil first nearly fifteen years ago and after rereading, I am stunned at the amount of information I must have skimmed over the first time. Interesting technology, but uneven --

George Trinkaus is author and publisher of some half-dozen books on Nikola Tesla, and related subjects. While I have written this review specifically for Trinkaus's, "Radio Tesla," it largely applies to his other books as well.
I have three good things to say and one not-so-good. First the good:
1) The books are moderately priced at... to.... And while they do have a slightly primitive, self-published look, the printing and production quality are adequate - no color, though.
2) Trinkaus provides an affordable way of acquiring certain Tesla literature, otherwise hard to obtain.
3) Trinkaus provides a source of "retro technology" - you know: how to make a radio using a blued razor blade and some paper clips - that sort of thing. Retro technology may appeal to old-timers who want to relive their youth. But it also has appeal for younger people, especially ones who have read Jules Verne. (You are marooned on an island. You have a few simple things, but no radio. So you start to think ... could I make a radio using only ...)
Here are some of the contents of "Radio Tesla:" 1) Tesla's radio principles. 2) high voltage, sudden pulse, 3) Tesla's transmitter, 4) spark, 5) low frequency, 6) conduction through ground, 7) etheric medium, 8) grounded radio, 9) resonance, 10) earth resonance, 11) radio-free energy, 12) lament on solid state, 13) capacitive antennas, 14) studded mushroom (Wardencliff).
OK, here is the not-so-good part: Certain Trinkaus assertions smack of Tesla cultism. Trinkaus appears to support Tesla's assertions that Heinrich Hertz ("father of radio") was completely wrong in his understanding of how radio works. Furthermore (claims Trinkaus) modern engineers have turned away from Tesla and foolishly followed Hertz. How can this be? Certainly Hertz was only human and capable of his share of mistakes. But science requires that theories be constantly tested and re-examined. How could engineers possibly communicate with a spacecraft outside the solar system based on a completely erroneous theory? Isn't it much more likely that Tesla, outstripped by his colleagues in the race to develop radio, was overcome by rancor and lashed out at them?

Happy to find this series.

Bought this book for our 18 month old son as we live on a small lake. While not a pond (as in the book), I figured it would still be a good reading resource to learn about water animals, insects, etc. Like most children, our son loves Dr. Suess and we watch the PBS The Cat in The Hat so he is well familiar with The Cat. I admit this book may be a little too mature for our 18 month old to fully grasp all of the details BUT it's never too early to start learning, right?? He actually enjoyed the pictures and even picked out the "frog", "duck", etc while I read the book to him for the 1st time. I can see this book being read many many MANY times in the future! Can't wait to look into getting more books from this series.

Excellent children's book

I've been collecting and reading all of the new Dr. Suess Knows A Lot About that series. They are fun to read and my 4 year old is learning some really involved things about stuff you would not think to take the effort to teach them about. For instance in this book, water striders, bugs that breathe from air bubbles, and algae. The great thing is that the sentences are easy enough that I bet he reads the book to me before he is 6. He already has the words memorized from me reading it over and over that he can complete my sentences - so I know he's listening and absorbing the info. He even points to the pictures to tell me what he knows about the insect/animal before I read the page. Great series of books!

No matter how gifted they are at age 4, they still like to keep it fun and silly. This book fits in with our science curriculum and keeps it fun and silly too. :) In fact the whole series has been a real blessing when it comes to keeping science fun. These books follow along nicely with the national science curriculum.
